“Who said anything about my brother?”

“What are you trying to say?”

“I will take you home if you wish. Twenty-four hours for you to at least visit anyone you desire. I only ask that you try to keep our existence quiet.”

She chewed her lip. Going home had been what she’d wanted all along, but now that she had the chance, she hesitated. Would she be placing Jeff in danger? She ached to see him. To have him wrap his strong arms around her and make all of this go away. Except none of this was going anywhere. Deep down, she knew what she was. DNA did not lie.

“I sense your concerns and I can keep a guard close by if that makes you feel better.”

This time, she narrowed her gaze at him. “If I really am your Lomara, why would you send me home to another man?”

“Because it is what you desire. Unlike my brother, I only wish your happiness and if it is this mortal, then so be it.”

There was no reason not to believe him. “What about the king and queen?”

“What about them? You already know the queen has been on your side the entire time. As one of our people, you will always be welcome here. This is your home, not your prison.”

“I need to tell Jeff what I am.” She let out a laugh. “Not that he will believe me, but I need to make him understand.”

“Acceptable. I will take you to his doorstep if that is your wish.”

“Yes!” She did not think about this another second. “And the guard, I would feel much better having someone watching over us in case Zolar finds me.”

He tipped his head. “Consider it done. Do you wish to go now?”

“No time like the present.”

He stepped closer and held out his hand, which she accepted. “I have sent Talon word he is to follow us and keep guard. Do not worry, he will be out of sight.” He bent closer and placed a tender kiss on her cheek. “I hope you find what it is you seek.”

A portal opened and the next thing she knew, they were standing on the sidewalk to Jeff’s home. It looked the same as it had before. The three-story colonial home had been in his family since it had been built in 1916.

“No one can see us. I will stay here until you reach the door.”

Her heart raced as she swallowed the sand in her mouth. “Thank you.” Not giving herself time to reconsider, she marched up the walk, then up the stairs to the front door and pressed the bell. A moment later, the door opened, and Jeff stood there, his jaw unhinged.

“Sheila? Dear god, is it really you?”

“Yes, darling. It’s really me.”

CHAPTER14

Before Zander even arrived back home, he knew she was gone.

“How in the fuck?”

She was in the mortal world and while he didn’t know the place, he suspected she was withhim. What he didn’t understand was how. It didn’t seem like something Greydon would do unless there had been good reason. He sensed both the king and queen in the library so he headed in that direction using a portal rather than walk. He was in a damn hurry.

“Why is Sheila in the mortal world?”

Both his brother and sister-in-law looked up from a pile of scrolls laid out on the long wooden table.

“What do you mean? She was in her room the last time I spoke with her,” Aimee replied.

“She is not here.”

Greydon came around the table. “He would know where she was with the blood bond.” He stopped in front of Zander. “I know nothing about her leaving, but I have my suspicions.”

And now so did he. “Orien.” He fisted his hands at his side because right now he wanted to punch someone.
