I swallow and cup her cheek, looking into her shiny hazel eyes. “I mean it Lucy. I love you two more than I thought was ever possible.” Her lips part and eyes grow wide. “I know you’re not ready to say it, but I can’t hold it in anymore. You and Hudson, you guys are mine, my future. I know we’ve only known each other a few weeks, but that energy we feel between us, not everyone gets that and I’m not letting that go.”
Lucy swallows and nods her head. “I think Hudson would like that,” she says, giving me an answer to my original question.
I nod and give her a quick kiss on her cheek. “Go find your seat with Charlie. I’ll send Hudson back to you when we’re done.” Lucy turns and walks over to Charlie, still in a dazed state.
Charlie gives me a questioning look. “I’m going to take Hudson for pregame stuff, can you come get him when it’s time?”
She gives me a nod then heads off with Lucy.
“Where’s Mom going?” I hear Hudson ask behind me.
I turn to him and sling my arm around his shoulders. “She’s going to go to her seat. We’re going to hang out for pregame stuff.”
“Really?” he shouts in excitement.
“Yep, let’s introduce you to some of the guys you don’t know.”
I look back over my shoulder one more time where Lucy disappeared. I hope I didn’t move too fast. But I can’t help what I feel with her. Hudson lets out a whoop and we head off towards my team. I push my worries to the back of my mind and focus on my time with Hudson.
CHAPTERFIFTEEN
lucy
I’m sittingin my seat behind home plate watching Hudson and Kessler in a dazed state. He told me he loves me.
No shit, my inner voice says in a snarky tone.
I shake myself out of my trance and grab my phone to text Kara. I’m opening my text thread when I hear a familiar voice calling my name.
“Lucy!” I hear and turn to see Marlene and Henry making their way to me.
I stand and Marlene greets me with a tight hug that instantly makes everything better. I return her hug, not realizing how much I missed her.
“Where’s Hudson?” she asks, looking around me.
“Oh, uh-” I point to the field where Hudson and Kessler are tossing a ball around with a few of his other teammates, laughing and having a good time.
Marlene’s hand moves to her chest. “Oh, isn’t that just a sight,” she says. She turns back to look at me, eyes red-rimmed. I feel my eyes sting again and nod my head, not trusting my voice to speak.
“Now quit hogging the girl and let me get a hug in,” Henry says moving past Marlene for a hug of his own. “Enough with the waterworks, you two,” he jokes, releasing me. “This is a happy day. Let’s enjoy it.”
We both chuckle and take our seats. Marlene’s chatting with me about her neighbors down the road from her having to sell their place because it’s become too much work for them. A thought pops into my head about how nice it would be if we could buy their place and live closer.
Wait, what!
We? Two seconds ago I was freaking out about him telling me he loves me and here I am thinking about how nice it would be forusto live closer to his family. What the hell is going on?
Marlene’s looking at me expectantly, like she just asked me a question. I give myself a mental shake and pull myself back into the conversation. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
She chuckles and nods to my phone in my hand. “I said your phone went off dear, but you looked like you were lost in your thoughts.”
“Oh, yeah. I uh, just remembered something I have to take care of tomorrow at work. I’m sorry,” I tell her, apologizing for lying, but she doesn’t know that.
“No need to apologize dear, you’re a busy woman.”
My phone beeps again, then again. “Sorry, I’ll switch it to silent.”
“Sounds like someones trying to get a hold of you,” Marlene says. “Go ahead and check it.”
