I lean back and close my laptop just as I hear the front door open. Getting up, I peek my head out of my office and see Hudson dumping his backpack on the floor and head to the kitchen.
“Hudson,” I call from the doorway. He stops halfway to the kitchen and looks down the hallway at me.
“Yeah?”
“Backpack.” I nod my head towards the object in question. He huffs and turns around, picking his backpack up and hanging it up on the hook six inches from where he dropped it. “Thank you.”
He doesn’t say anything and turns back towards the kitchen. Grabbing my phone, I shut the door to my office and join him in the kitchen. Taking a seat at the breakfast bar, I wait for Hudson to finish finding a snack before I tell him about Kessler’s plan.
“So,” I start, “Judd has a game tonight.”
“Yeah I know,” he says around a mouth full of peanut butter and pretzel so it sounds like “ah I mow.”
I shake my head and continue “Kessler came by this morning, he wanted to see if we might want to go,” I say, leaving out the other reason. Hudson pauses, pretzel mid way to his mouth.
“Really!? Are we going?”
“Well,” I say, drawing out the word. He looks at me expectantly. “Kara, Marie, and I are having a girl’s night.”
His shoulders droop and he shoves the pretzel into his mouth.
“But.” Hudson’s eyes shoot to me. “You, Kade, and Kessler are going to go and have a guy’s night.”
Hudson lets out a whoop and fist pumps the air. “I’m going to go tell Kade!” he says, tearing out of the kitchen and into the backyard that connects to Kara’s. I can hear him yelling Kade’s name through the open door.
My phone starts vibrating and I look down to see Kara’s name.
“Is Kade as excited as Hudson is?” I ask before hearing another loud whoop from the backyard.
Kara laughs. “Does that answer your question? I’m heading over now. See you in a minute.”
I hang up the phone and see Hudson and Kade talking animatedly through the window. Kara appears at the gate connecting our backyards holding two bottles of wine in her arms. Oh we are definitely in for some dishing tonight. Kara makes her way through the sliding door and immediately goes to the fridge to put the wine away. She closes the fridge and turns, leaning across the island and propping her chin on her hand.
“Sooo, how’s Kessler?”
“Uh, fine I guess,” I say, giving her a questioning look.
“Mmmhmm, I bet,” she says, smirking at me.
“What’s that look for?” I ask
“Oh, no reason.” she says nonchalantly. “You just have this glow to you.” She looks out the sliding door to see where the boys are at. She lowers her voice and adds, “You know that post sex glow.”
I let out a gasp. “How in the…”
“HA I KNEW IT!” she screams pointing her finger at me. She lowers her voice and says, “I thought I saw his truck leave your house this morning.”
“It doesn’t pay for you to work from home.” Kara has her own business as a graphic designer, which means she has the luxury of working from home. Which today is unfortunate for me.
“Oh, yes it does,” she says, giving me a smug look.
The boys come back through the sliding door ending our conversation.
Thank God.
Kara gives me a pointed look and I know we will be talking about this later once Marie gets here.
“When is Kessler going to be here?” Hudson asks, practically bouncing around the kitchen.
