“Where are you?!”I bark into the mindlink at Sam.
“We’re still miles away,”Sam replies.
I growl.
A wolf prowls forward, and I pin him to the growl with the help of my wolf, tearing his head apart from his body by his ear until his yelping stops.
“Dax, what do we do?”
I glance back at my mate, desperate to get her out of here. Our only option is for me to hold them off until Sam and the rest can get to us.
I take out another vampire, ripping him to shreds.
“Who can get to us first?”I ask Sam.
“Caleb, he’s leading the way. He’s almost to you now.”
I curse the Moon Goddess for Her cruel sense of humor. Unfamiliar with these grounds, my men couldn’t pinpoint where we were faster than a native. As much as I don’t like it, he’s our best chance.
The mutt arrives in wolf form, jumping over the mob, snapping a vampire in half with his mouth and tossing him to the trees. Shifting into his human form, he dives and rolls, then lands beside me to keep Alaina out of harm’s way.
“Your Majesty.” He nods.
Normally, I detest him and his care for my mate. In this instance, his attentiveness for her is something I can tolerate and even use.As long as he’s willing to lay down his life for my queen, he and I are on the same page.
Even with him here, I don’t let up but neither do the vermin attacking us. With the three of us fighting, we might’ve had a chance. But with Alaina injured, the others being too far away, I know we can’t hold them off much longer.
We need a new strategy, but at least one of us dies in every plan I can come up with. While every fiber of my being would rather it be the mutt, the rogues and vamps aren’t focusing on him. If I ran with her, they would just chase us, leaving this mutt to go after the crowd behind, wasting necessary energy.
In such a scenario, we both die.
There’s only one way Alaina makes it out of this safely, and I despise the plan entirely.
The mutt and I lock eyes, and he nods, coming to the same conclusion.
Why does he also have to be naked? Dammit. He better not fuck this up.
“You will protect her.”
It isn’t a question or show of good faith. He will protect her or he’ll meet a monster that makes any other version of me seem like child’s play, his screams will carry over into hell.
“You know I will.”
The heavy pause between us speaks louder than the vermin snapping at us.
I grind my teeth, my jaw flexing. Taking another look at my mate, whose wide eyes burn my soul, I force myself out of her violet trance before I change my mind.
“Take her and go,” I reluctantly bark.
My wolf is destroying my insides, hating the idea of being separated from our mate and relying on another to keep her safe. I don’t know if I’ll make it out of this alive, but I sure as hell won’t let them take her from me.
A vampire pounces on me when he thinks I’m not paying attention, and I snatch its throat. I ignore the bloodsucker desperately snapping its jaws at me. His dirty nails scrape at my flesh, stinging me. The smell of my own blood being spilled fuels the darkness in me further. But it also stirs the vampires.
“No way. I’m staying,” she protests.
Her words fill me with dread.
“What?!” I whip my head to look back at her. She’s unbelievable.“Not a chance in hell. You stay here, you get killed.”
