Dax closes it behind her.

“A little warning before meeting your sister would’ve been nice.”

“I didn’t know she was coming.”

“Were you even going to tell me you had a sister?”

How is it possible someone so guarded is related to someone so open?

He raises an eyebrow. “I was a little busy having to remind you not to go near the mutt.”

I cringe at his clipped tone.Touché.

Dax pulls back the bedspread. “Bedtime. We have combat training at six.”

“Combat training?”

“Yes. Is that a problem?”

I throw my hands up to surrender, shaking my head as I make my way to the bed he’s drawn.

“I guess I’m just used to you arguing with me,” he jokes.

I laugh.

I wouldn’t miss a chance to kick his ass.

Dax pulls the cotton sheets over my body, tucking me in. While he fusses with the pillows, my curiosity gets the best of me.

“About the rogue-vampire attacks—”

“Nothing you need to concern yourself with.”

I sit up. “If the attacks are happening to what issupposedto be my new pack, I think I should know.”

Dax leans on the bed, caging me with his arms on either side of my legs, and searches my face. His lips pucker as he squints at me, and I wish I knew what he was thinking.

I think how soft his lips are and fight the urge to lean in and suck that bottom lip of his, to nip at it. Dax fingercombs my hair above my ears and grins. But this grin isn’t the evil one I’ve seen surface before he kills. This soft smile holds adoration.

My wolf howls at his proximity and tries to make sense of how I can get him to look at me this way later.

“I like hearing you say ‘your pack,’” he says, stroking me. I remain perfectly still, afraid to ruin this moment. “They haven’tentered our borders, but they attacked the Midnight pack a few hours ago.”

I bite my lip, averting my gaze.

The Midnight pack is just a few miles north of here, which means they’re getting uncomfortably close.

Dax must sense my unease as he pulls my focus back to him. “I won’t let anyone harm you.”

I believe him. He may be able to anticipate my next moves, but I’ve never had to predict his, since he follows through every time. Except for when he said he would kill Caleb, which I’m not complaining about. Part of me thinks, however, that he only speaks his actions into an unchanging prophecy because he knows no one can stop him even if they wanted to. He’d see it coming.

He kisses my forehead. “Get some rest.” Then he turns for the door.

I grab his hand, sparks returning from the touch, shocking myself and him. “Wait!” I cringe at how eager I sound. “Isn’t this your room? Where will you sleep?”

He pulls my hand up to his lips and kisses the back of it. “I have some things I need to take care of.” He smiles. “Then I’ll join you.”

“In here? With me?”
