The black wolf stares at me and exhales hard through his nose, as if contemplating. Finally, he lowers his paw and looks back at Caleb. He growls a warning at Caleb, rises, and shifts into his human form in an instant.
My jaw hits the floor.
He stands before me, a massive wall of muscle and power. Basking in the sight of him, I notice his aura brings clarity that he distinctively surpasses all in the kingdom by size and strength. Caleb is in high regard with his physique, but this man is outmatched. The Moon Goddess Herself carved his body from stone. My wolf howls and wags her tail in approval.
His sun-kissed skin is reminiscent of the high cliffs surrounding the land. His shoulders are as expansive as a mountain, providing a protective shade to anyone who stands in his shadow. Pecs form powerful hills on his chest that rise and fall with each breath. The six-pack chiseling his torso paints peaks and valleys that taunt my eyes lower. My mouth yearns to lick the beads of sweat rolling to the black tendrils surrounding his package.
“Mate,” I say instinctually.
My tongue darts to lick my lips, my wolf craving to close the distance between us and devour the man before me. My wolf’s recognition of him conjures a sensation that I’ve been missing him for a lifetime.
The man in front of me smiles, confirming my discernment. His appraisal of my soft curves soften his fierce gaze into a slow savor as he explores my naked form, the murderous gleam in his eyes transforming into devious intent.
“You don’t know how long I’ve waited for you.”
He breathes silk.
Muscles flex as his piercing stare travels down my navel and loiters over my sex. His fixation holds before exploring my thighs and coming to rest at my feet.Caramel eyes swirl a fiery storm as they’ve settled to my own once again. He hasn’t even touched my body, and it’s as though he’s explored every inch.
My wolf writhes under his attention, longing for him.
“Worth it,” he says.
“Who are you?” I ask.
My hair blows in the wind, the ends teasing my breasts as if he’s willed them to linger and caress my skin for him.
“King Dax, I—” Caleb stumbles back, eyes wide.
King Dax snatches his throat and growls at him, baring his teeth.
“King?!” I parrot. Shocked, I gaze between Caleb and the man before me.
This can’t be happening. The king willneverlet his fated mate get away, and I can’t imagine Caleb could kill him so that he can mark me instead. Especially not if everything I’ve heard about King Dax is true. He’s known to be intimidating, dark, and ruthless. The king of torture.
This is a disaster.Heis a disaster.
Mate is tall, dark, handsome, and powerful, a perfect masterpiece.
And potentially a murderer,I remind my wolf.
My wolf shrugs. Mate probably had his reasons.
My wolf and I don’t always see eye to eye. Although part of me, she sees things as an animal would. While I see a murderer, she sees an apex predator, an ideal mate to breed with.
Mate can murder this—
Absolutely not,I respond.
When a wolf’s parent dies, the power lives on in their first born, so when King Dax’s parents died—or, like others say, when he killed them—he inherited his father’s ability to see people’s plans. Because of this, King Dax is the best fighter in the kingdom. While he can anticipate everyone else’s intentions, he is anything but predictable. Deranged and unhinged.
Some days, he kills unnecessarily, as if he can’t be bothered by inconvenience. Other times, he enjoys himself while he tortures his prey. I’ve heard of the women he breaks during the Hunt, ruining their chances of being with their mate after luring them into his twisted lair. He is a selfish prick. A collector of women.
The Hunt was created centuries ago to give alphas and royals the best chance to find their mate. Pack law states an alpha’s offspring couldn’t inherit the throne until they are mated. However, his parents’ death escalated the situation, making him a young king at twenty years old. The council had high hopeshe’d find his true mate the following year, making him and the pack stronger. That was eight years ago. Now that he’s found me, he’ll never let me go.
Fuck my life.
“Leave,” he seethes at Caleb without taking his eyes off me.
