Mason's shoulders drop. "But she's my sister," he replies, hurt evident in his voice.
Noah looks down at me and smiles, showing off those damn dimples. "Yes, but we have a connection, and I sure as hell won't pretend otherwise. What we have isn't going to be hidden like some kind of sordid little secret. Jessica deserves better than that." Noah cups my cheek affectionately, and my cheeks heat. "Especially after everything she's been through."
Mason groans. "How would you feel if you were in my shoes, man?"
Noah looks at Caleb. It still blows my mind how they can have a conversation without words. Caleb gives Noah a curt nod and replies. "Honestly, initially, I'd be pissed off, protective as shit… but once I thought about it, I'd be glad she found someone like you."
Mason shakes his head.
"Fucking hell, man, tell me how you really feel." I see his lips twitch. "But I swear if either of you so much as make her cry, even once, I will ruin you, friends or not. There will be no coming back from it."
Noah smiles, letting me go as he steps forward.
"Her happiness is and always will be our priority," he says, offering his hand towards Mason. I think he will ignore it, but to my relief, he clasps it and shakes it before pulling him into a quick hug.
Caleb takes Noah's place as he lowers his voice, but I still hear him. "I'd burn the world to the ground for her if she asked me to."
Resigned, Mason grunts, pulling him into a hug. "So romantic. And on that note, can we at least keep the public displays of affection to a minimum? At least until I have time to wrap my head around this," he says as he releases Caleb with a slap to the back.
I roll my eyes. "As long as you're all in agreement," I say, crossing my arms.
Mason steps forward, opens his arms, and I go willingly as he holds me against his chest.
"I'm so fucking sorry I wasn't here to protect you and didn't vet the bastard properly."
I pull back and look up. "It's not your fault, Mason. But I'm going to be okay, I promise." And when I look at Caleb as he stands beside Noah, I know it's true.
