His tail twitched again, and Mayra came closer. He sniffed her too and let out a sweet purr-like sound. He licked her forehead with the tip of his tongue before turning back to Emlyn and doing the same.

A warmth spread through Niev’s soul as her wolf welcomed their daughters with a proud but gentle howl.

The End

The epilogue contains a cliffhanger!

Epilogue

Restlessly, Emlyn climbed the mountain path leading up to her favorite spot. She hadn’t been able to sit still in days, but today it was especially bad. Her skin itched and her mind swirled. Her feet wanted to walk, but she had no idea what her destination was.

Panting and huffing, she pulled herself up the last stretch of rockiness before standing on the cliff overlooking her village. Though she was exhausted from the climb, her mind still wouldn’t let her ease. It was as if she was pulled somewhere but she just couldn’t see where.

“I thought you might come up here,” her father’s deep but homey voice came from behind her.

“I didn’t know you were looking for me.”

His long black hair was tied back in a bun and he wore a gentle smile on his face as he came closer and stood next to her.

“I thought you said you would be stuck in the office all day.”

“The good thing about being alpha is that I’m my own boss,” he chuckled. “Your mother was worried about you and sent me out to look for you.”

“I didn’t mean to worry her.”

“Would you like to talk about what is on your mind?”

“I don’t even know myself,” she admitted freely.

Her family was special in many ways. Not just their history but what closely knitted community of strength and love they were.

“Even Aruna has mentioned her concerns. You’ve been out and about all alone the past few days and we just want to make sure you are alright.”

“I know. I didn’t mean to push her away.”

He didn’t reply, only looked over the village, where the preparations for Selene’s Night were in full motion. The tree was being decorated and the bonfire set up. Families were adding their dishes to the buffet that was part of the tradition while the kids ran around and splashed in the lake.

“I feel restless, like I’m being pulled toward something that I can’t see.”

Her father turned his head, his brown eyes studying her closely before speaking again. “I’ve felt that twice in my life, once when I met your mother and Selene was pulling me toward my fate and once when my wolf emerged from my soul.”

Trying to wrap her mind around his words, she looked up at him unable to speak.

“As alpha I can feel the arrival of a new wolf and this moon there will be two. One of them feels different though and until now I couldn’t figure out why. Our family is very special. We’ve been blessed by Selene more than once. With your bloodline, I should’ve expected something like this.”

“What do you mean?”

“I believe Selene is blessing you with a wolf.”

“But I’m a girl.”

“You will be a woman soon enough. You are coming of age not just with years, but with your wolf emerging tonight. Listen into your soul, and you will see that you’re no longer alone.”

She closed her eyes and as she searched her mind, where she could feel another much rougher and yet simpler soul deep within her…
