I catch myself against the door frame before I fall onto the floor that’s starting to suck my feet down like quicksand. I slam the door shut.

Thank fuck.

At least we got them out.

I turn and curse that I’m trapped with my back to the enemy. Aiden’s trying to cut through the ground to free himself with his whip sword, then turns his sword on the guy causing this when that doesn’t work.

The goon jumps back. As soon as his hands break contact with the floor, the concrete hardens. I fire my gun at him to push him back even further, and Aiden chips away at the concrete at his feet until he’s free. He does the same for me while I keep the goon back.

We chase him into the kitchen, avoiding the guy still passed out, and I climb onto the island. I run across it and launch myself at him, tackling him to the ground. My gift hums and glows as I block his gift from surfacing.

I press a hand against his chest and aim my gun at his head.

Something flies at me, and Aiden’s sword bats it away. He runs past me to the next room. The ring of metal echoes, and there’s a grunt.

My finger tightens on the trigger.

“Wait, wait! I have information. I know things—”

I slam the butt of my gun against the side of his head to knock him out.

“Fine. But not right now.” I take off after Aiden and find him fighting back three others simultaneously. I pick one and shoot, but my gun clicks empty.

I drop the magazine and reach for another in my pocket.

A flash of blonde out of the corner of my eye grabs my attention in a chokehold. I lurch around in time as a slender figure turns the corner.

My pulse roars in my ears, drowning out the sound of anything else.

It couldn’t be.

It’s impossible. I must be seeing things, or someone is playing a trick on me.

I don’t think.

I run.

Chapter thirty-two

Raegan

Jackson makes quick work of the lock and then we’re in. My nose wrinkles the moment I cross the threshold. It smells like metal and old urine.

It doesn’t take too much of a guess to figure out what they’ve been using this place for.

“I’m burning it down,” I grumble as we walk into a large empty truck bay.

Kellan laughs and throws his fist into his hand. “I’m in.”

A small smile curves Jackson’s lips that tells me he’s on board as well.

Perfect.

I cup my hands around my mouth and shout into the empty space. “Joe!” My voice echoes and carries through the building just as I’d hoped. It’s our job to draw the congressman to us and act as a distraction while the others are on stealth and rescue.

We’re the perfect team for that job between the three of us.

“Hey, Joe! I’m here early for our deal!”
