Of course, he did. I should’ve known he wouldn’t have snooped. Even my own research on him supported the fact that he’s a good guy. Now I feel like an even bigger idiot.

Tears well in my eyes, blurring my vision. I cover my face with my hands.

He wraps his arm around me and pulls me closer. “Hey, it’s been a long day with court and then taking care of Dodge. You must be exhausted, and I’m not helping.”

My head rests against him, and I enjoy the sensation of his heartbeat drumming against my ear. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Strong and steady. Soothing too. I sigh. “I’m tired.”

“Do you want me to run you a bath or just tuck you into bed before I go?”

“I thought you wanted—”

“Not tonight,” he doesn’t hesitate to answer. “I’ll always want to have sex with you, Jayne. Always. But you’re tired and need to rest. Everything else can wait.”

The sincerity in his voice makes the butterflies in my stomach swoop and do somersaults. At least I hope it’s that and not morning sickness at night.

“Let’s get you in bed. I can rub your feet.”

“I’d like that, but first, could you put the charm bracelet on me?” I hold out my arm.

“Happily.” As his smile lights up his handsome face, he takes the bracelet out of the box and fastens it around my wrist. “A perfect fit.”

If not for the lawsuit, I wonder if we would be too.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

NATE

I don’t want to leave Jayne, but she’s sound asleep and, from the serene look on her beautiful face, rest is what she needs. She might sleep better with me, as I do with her next to me, but I can’t deny how hurt I am that she accused me of spying. Her suspicions make me wish this case was over. Until the trial is finished or the case is settled, I don’t know if we can move forward as a couple.

And we need to.

Not just for the baby’s sake, either. For ours.

Zelda agrees settling the case would only open us to more frivolous lawsuits, but I’m getting impatient where Jayne is concerned. I need her to trust me, to want me, to…

Fuck. Am I falling in love with Jayne?

That’s how it feels to me with her being my every thought and breath and wanting to always be with her, but can I trust those emotions under the circumstances?

After another long gaze at her, I can’t still can’t calm the thoughts racing through my brain. I quietly leave the bedroom, reset the alarm system to give me time to get outside, and then leave. I double-check the lock on the front door, even though two bodyguards are stationed across the street between the two houses.

My cell phone buzzes, and I glance at the screen. Zelda. She hasn’t texted me this late in months. I open my messages, and my stomach drops to my feet. What the fuck?

Zelda: Our place was broken into tonight. I’d gone with Jack to pick up a late dinner.

Nate: Are you okay, Zel?

Zelda: A bit shaken up and feeling violated, but they never got past the living room. Unfortunately, that looks like an earthquake hit and a hurricane tore through it at the same time. They were definitely looking for something.

Nate: Where was the fucking bodyguard? After that whole fiasco with Carrington, you agreed having a protection detail is a good idea.

Zelda: The bodyguard was with us. At least they didn’t get into the office. Anything important is at Zentello or locked in the safe.

Nate: I’m just relieved you’re okay. I’ll come over.

Zelda: Thanks, but Jack’s here.

Of course, Jack’s there. They live together, and I’m no longer needed.
