The older woman smiles and takes slow tentative steps past us. “Thank you.” She gives us a sweet smile. “You youngsters need to stop this foreplay of words and just go fuck already.”
As Jayne and I both gasp, the lady continues by us, walking cautiously as her walking stick sinks into the thick carpet.
I shrug. “Well, you heard the lady.”
Jayne lightly slaps the back of her hand against my stomach. “In your dreams, Mr. Lowe. I’ll see you in court.”
She walks off at a fast pace, leaving me watching her ass wiggle.
“This isn’t over, Jayne,” I call out.
“Yes, it is, Nathaniel.” She stops in front of a door and lets herself in.
I smile. Her room is right next door to mine. This will be interesting.
In my room, I take my time showering and changing for dinner. I thought Cliff and I would eat together, but he has plans with his daughter who lives nearby.
I have a half hour before my reservation in the hotel’s restaurant, so I turn on the TV. Nothing looks interesting. Besides, I’m desperate to talk to or to kiss Jayne again, or better yet, pick up where we left off in the elevator. I stare at the connecting door as if it’s calling to me.
Something is definitely between us. Something I can’t let go.
Deciding what to do, I pick up my wallet, phone, and my key card and leave my room. One step to my right, and I’m in front of Jayne’s door. I check to make sure my shirt is tucked in fully and smooth my hair. Certain I look my best, I straighten and knock twice, with force.
“Open up, Jayne,” I say. “I know that you’re in there.”
As I raise my hand to knock again, the door swings open. I grin, ready to say something witty and flirty. I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. All I can do is stare at the half-naked man standing in front of me. What the fuck?
CHAPTER EIGHT
JAYNE
Dammit. Nathaniel’s at my door, and Oliver answered it, without his shirt on.
I rush to the door and peer over Oliver’s shoulder to see Nathaniel glaring at the shirtless man in my room. I may not be a scientist, even though I doubled majored in Biology and Chemistry, but my psychology training to select jurors lets me know exactly what he’s thinking. He’s wrong about the situation—Oliver came to my room to review what happened during the hearing and spilled hot coffee down his shirt, so he took it off—but this isn’t the time for explanations.
The defendant should never be knocking on my door. If Oliver tells Jason, I could be in big trouble—as in off this case or, worse, fired.
I clear my throat, hoping I’ll sound professional. “This is highly irregular, sir. What do you want?”
“I’d like to talk to you,” Nathaniel says. “Can I come in?”
“No.” That doesn’t stop him from pushing the door open. I squeak and step back. “What are you doing?”
He raises his eyebrow like it’s a stupid question. “Coming in.”
Although Oliver’s forehead creases, he stands to one side and lets Nathaniel into the room while I throw my hands in the air, silently asking Oliver why he let in the stupid idiot. I receive a shrug in reply.
Nathaniel stands in front of me. “Your room is bigger than mine. How does that work?”
“Maybe I’m a superior guest.” I don’t want this visit to go on any longer than it has already. I’ll have a hard enough time explaining to Oliver why the defendant knocked on my door. My young colleague is the type to earn brownie points by snitching to his stepdad. “What do you want?”
Oliver moves next to him, and it looks like a new cast for a Magic Mike sequel is getting ready to perform. Nathaniel in jeans and a slim-fitting shirt is a smidge hotter than a shirtless Oliver. I mean both men are attractive, but Nathaniel has my blood simmering to a boil. The way he’s looking at me all mean and moody is really doing it for me, and a party is starting in my panties because he is turning me on.
Ugh! What am I even thinking?
“Both of you out.” I push past them to grab the door handle. “Now.”
“Are you going?” Nathaniel asks Oliver.
