“What?”
“Impressed you.”
Now it’s my turn to laugh. “Maybe.”
“No maybe about it. Now, where were we?” Nathaniel moves closer to me again.
Oh, I remember where we were, and my heart beats even faster.
When he takes a breath, I assume he’ll suggest the possibilities he mentioned before Lottie showed up, but he remains silent. Damn her for interrupting us. She’s like a younger sister to me. Showing up at the wrong time is her superpower.
Nathaniel’s eyes graze over my face, searching for something.
I wait, but nothing happens.
Guess it’s up to me. Fine. Even though I’ve never done this in my life. I take a breath.
“I have a proposition,” I say breathily, trying to ignore the throb in my panties.
Nathaniel licks his lips, like he’s anticipating the taste of something amazing, and I hope I don’t disappoint him.
“What would that be?” he asks.
“You and me. It’s clear we want it to happen, so what’s the point in talking about it or drinking more to make what we want to do seem less reckless?” I glance at his crotch, which is clearly packing something hard. I can’t wait to see it, touch it, taste it.
He studies me. “What are you saying?”
“Really, Nathaniel, you don’t know?”
Wicked laughter lights his eyes. “I might, but I need you to be the one to say it, Jayne.”
“You, me, and sex tonight.”
“Yes.” He motions to the bartender, who hands him the bill. Nathaniel throws a wad of cash on the bar, grabs my hand, and leads me toward the exit.
I hold on tightly to Nathaniel and wonder if I’ll finally have an orgasm tonight.
CHAPTER THREE
NATE
What the fuck is wrong with me?
A gorgeous woman wants to have sex with me, and I almost second-guessed the whole thing. Thankfully, I didn’t hesitate long enough to lose the chance and got my act together. Now, I’m outside on the sidewalk with Jayne, trying to figure out what to do next. It’s been a while since I’ve had a one-night stand, and that begs the question—my place or hers?
I didn’t introduce myself as Nate. Instead, I used my full name, Nathaniel, which is only used by Mom when I’m in trouble. But I don’t like people—okay, women—knowing who I am in situations like these. Not that I find myself here often.
A taxi pulls up to the curb, and Jayne takes a step toward it.
The arrival seems fortuitous without having to wait for a ride via an app, but…I stop her.
“What’s wrong?” She tugs on my hand and then releases it. “Have you changed your mind?”
That’s the last thing I’ll do tonight. Jayne’s incredibly stunning and she’d sparked a fire inside him for the first time in a long time. I grab her hand so she doesn’t think I’m saying goodbye. “God, no. I just…”
I’m hesitant to say the words because I don’t want her to think I’m a fortysomething fuckboy who’ll take what he wants from her and run. She seems nice, like the kind of woman I’d date under different circumstances, but neither of us is in that place with our recent breakups.
I might as well say what’s on my mind. “I want to make sure this is what you want.”
