“So he can’t watch us, but we have to watch him. Got it.”
She laughs. “Come on. Let’s get one of his toys, and you can show me what you’ve got.”
I can’t wait to do that now and once I get her alone. Maybe I should buy her some toys of her own. That would be fun.
Dodge is actually a sweet boy. However, I have to throw a toy about a hundred times more if I throw it once. The humping takes some getting used to, but it gives my arm a rest.
Jayne leans against me on the couch. It’s a basic slipcover sofa, but the throw pillows add pattern to it, and everything in the apartment appears dog proofed. “You’re good with Dodge.”
“This is easier than babysitting Harlowe and Willow.”
“You’ll be a good dad.”
Her words fill me with a joy I never could’ve imagined, sending heat and tingles rushing through me like a nuclear reaction. For a moment, I just blink, trying to gather myself and not let on how much those five words mean to me. “You think?”
She nods.
The future I’ve been imagining with her seems one step closer. I toss a stuffed moose, and Dodge chases it. “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Her reply is automatic, but she stares at me. “Can I ask you something?”
I grin at her. “About s-e-x?”
She rolls her eyes and playfully slaps at my arm. “Not about s-e-x.”
I can’t believe we’re spelling a word because of a dog. It’s probably good practice for the baby. “Okay, gorgeous, whatever it is, ask away.”
Jayne licks her lips. “Do you think that I should pull out of the case?”
My jaw drops. “What?”
“You heard me.”
I definitely heard her, but I don’t know why she’d ask the question. My heart pounds so hard I feel like it might implode. I take a breath and another, trying not to let on how much her question means to me so she can decide on her own. If she were off the case, life would be so much easier. Zentello should win easily. We have all the proof we need, but Jayne stepping down would be a real bonus. Not just because of her reputation as a stellar lawyer but because it would make seeing each other so much easier. There wouldn’t be concern over what might happen to her career because she’s risking a lot by being with me.
Still, I need to tread carefully. “Do you think you’ll lose, or that Sugar Valley Drugs doesn’t have a case?”
She shakes her head. “I know I can win.”
I remember her saying this case could get her a permanent job in Seattle, which would mean she’d stay in town. I don’t want her to regret walking away from something important to her. “Then no, you shouldn’t step down.”
“I thought that’s what you wanted.”
It is, but I also want what’s best for her. “There are two people here, and what you want matters. You’re a great lawyer, and if you want to continue the case, don’t step down.”
I don’t want her to jeopardize her career, especially if she believes in what she’s doing. I have to trust that as good as she is, the judge and jury will see we’re telling the truth.
Jayne slams her mouth to mine. Her kiss takes my breath away, and she slowly pulls back. “Wow, you’re so getting head tonight for that.”
I appreciate her words, but she seems to have forgotten something. “So are you once we’re back at your place. Your clue wasn’t only for me.”
She blushes.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
JAYNE
My grumbling stomach leads Nate to order takeout. Before I know it, the coffee table is full of take-out containers. I shake my head. “You must’ve ordered half the menu.”
