“I want a kid with Jayne, but I’ve left the choice up to her.” I wonder if that’s what she’s discussing with Lottie tonight. “Told her I’d support her whatever she decides.”
“Does she know who you are?”
That’s a valid question. The combination of growing up with wealthy parents and then becoming successful at Zentello has given us adequate experience dating women more interested in our money than us. “She didn’t that night. She does now.”
“You’re worth—”
“I know.”
“If she wants to be set for life—”
“Jayne isn’t like that. She has a career and loves what she does.”
“You know her that well already?” Curiosity drips from his words.
I’d love to answer yes, but I’m not going to lie. “No, but I can tell. She’s special.”
“They all are until they turn into gold diggers.”
“Chloe isn’t like that.”
His love for his wife shines brightly in his eyes. “No one is like her. Is Jayne a lot younger than you?”
“Only a few years. Jayne is thirty-seven.”
Ashton flinches. He opens his mouth and then closes it.
“Surprised?”
“Yeah. I am.” Chloe is in her twenties and looks it. I’ve dated a few women who were much younger than her.
“I know we just met, but Jayne could be the one, and I don’t want to fuck this up, especially with a baby involved. There’s also a work thing.”
Ashton lowers his bottle. “What kind of work thing?”
I look around to see if Chloe has come downstairs, but I don’t see her. I lower my voice. “No one can know. Not even Chloe, okay?”
“Okay.”
I take a breath and another. “Jayne is the lead attorney for the Sugar Valley Drugs case against us.”
“What the fuck!” Ashton yells. “Have you lost your fucking mind?”
“Jayne wasn’t on the case when we met.”
“And she is now, and she’s pregnant with your kid. This is a PR and corporate nightmare.”
That sums it up rather succinctly. “Yes.”
Ashton laughs, which is an unexpected reaction. “You were the golden child growing up and are the golden boy of the pharmaceutical industry, but you’ve outdone yourself this time, bro.”
“I know.” That beer of his looks mighty tasty right now. I won’t ask for one. I want to be a supportive… what the hell am I? Baby daddy? I cringe, hating the term.
Fuck. I want to be so much more than that. “What should I do?”
