NATE
God, she tastes good. Memories of our night together flash through my head, and I’m more than ready to relive those with her. Is there such a thing as a second-night stand? Two-night stand makes no sense since I’ll be back in Seattle tomorrow, and so will she, and I know how to contact her now, but Portland will be my new favorite town if I can have her again.
“I need to get you naked.” I kiss the soft skin of Jayne’s neck, relishing her scent. Maybe I could ask Jules to make a scent that matches Jayne. I can spray the perfume on my pillow when I can’t be near her. Then I remember Jules hasn’t been doing well with her pregnancy, so I don’t want to add to her problems right now. I’ll contact Christina to see if she has a fragrance that might work. “I need to get you naked and fuck you.”
My dick gets harder just thinking about fucking her.
Another knock on the door reminds me Oliver is waiting for Jayne on the other side. When she pulls away, I hold on to her tighter.
“Tell him to fuck off,” I whisper against her ear, getting more desperate by the second.
The next knock is louder and more insistent. “Jayne. I want my phone.”
“For God’s sake.” Jayne eases herself out of my arms. She picks up the guy’s phone on the dresser, marches over to the door, and flings it open. “Here.” She shoves it into his hands and then slams the door shut before turning back to me. “We can’t do this.”
I grin. “The fact you slammed the door on his face and not mine says otherwise.” I must sound cocky, but I don’t care. It’s the truth. Someone needs to say it.
“We need to talk, and we can’t do that with him around.” She crosses her arms over her chest, high, so that they are covering her breasts, and I instantly missed seeing them.
I take one of her hands in mine. “Okay, talk to me.”
“My career is on the line.” Her voice trembles, and I squeeze her hand to try to comfort her. “We can’t do this because of my career.”
“Your career? Okay.” I nod, understanding lawyers must follow some sort of ethical behavior. The same as us, but… “The fact you’ve been given the job of ruining my career and my company doesn’t count?”
She at least has the decency to blush. The pink looks charming on her, and I know I’m being a dick, but her career is getting in the way of us being together. Not just now, but as in having a relationship.
Jayne takes a breath. “I didn’t know that, though, did I?”
“No, you didn’t. This both caught us off guard.” I lead her toward the loveseat and sit down. I try to pull her onto my lap, but she struggles out of my arms and lands on the cushion next to me.
“Not now, Nathaniel.”
Her sharp tone has me raising my hands. “Go on.”
“This case is important to my firm. To me. I need to concentrate.”
She’s just too damn cute when she’s so serious, but I can’t smirk, so I nod again. “Okay. Point taken, yet I want to do this, and I’d say my career is more at risk, given the added stress of all the people I employ who could end up jobless and ultimately homeless if Zentello loses the case. Some of those employees might be forced to turn to crime or sell their bodies for food, and what if they have children? I mean—”
“Okay, okay.” It’s Jayne’s turn to hold up her hands in surrender. “This probably has bigger consequences for you than for me.”
I want to minimize what’s at stake for her. “This case could be huge for your career. That’s a big consequence. If you win, of course.”
“Why wouldn’t I win? I’m damn good at my job.” She appears affronted that I’d think otherwise.
“I’m sure you are, but our evidence is solid.” I shake my head, not remembering when discovery or evidence comes into play. I need Cliff to give me a rundown or ask Zelda, who probably knows enough about law to pass the bar on the first try. “Anyway, I’m not about to give my lawyer’s secret trump card away. Something we’d prefer to keep quiet if possible. Safe to say, you might lose, and it won’t have anything to do with your ability as a lawyer, remember that.”
“I’m not some wet-behind-the-ears, fresh-out-of-law-school attorney who only got the job because Daddy owns the company.”
Yep, too damn cute.
“I get the gist.” I need to tread carefully here. I never expected to see her again, and now that I have, I don’t want to lose my shot with her. Besides, I shouldn’t be too arrogant. According to Cliff, she’s smart and has a reputation as a shark attorney. Downplaying what he told me would be stupid. “You think you’re going to win.”
“Yes, I damn well do.”
I beg to differ, but I’m not sure she has the breath for another long monologue. I can’t help myself, though. I hate Sugar Valley even thinks they have a case. I can’t let that animosity bleed over to Jayne. So far, I don’t think I have. Although maybe I’d think differently if I hadn’t had my dick inside her and didn’t want to put it inside her again.
“As long as you know your client is talking through their ass, and we have concrete proof Orchid originated with Zentello and belongs to us.”
