The kiss is every bit as good as it had been at the courthouse, yet somehow better because now I know Jayne wants it too. I’m so caught up with her and running my hands down her body I don’t feel the elevator stop or see the doors open.

Jayne pulls away and gasps. I understand. We could easily get busted, though wouldn’t that get the entire case thrown out? That might be something to consider.

A woman in gym gear stands outside the elevator, holding on to her phone, and her gaze narrows in on us. “I’ll take the stairs.”

As she disappears out of sight, Jayne presses the hold doors open button. “Why don’t you take the stairs? Or I could. This elevator isn’t big enough to hold both of us and your ego.”

No way I’ll let her get away with that. I position my body between her and the panel so she can’t hold the doors open. “Oops.”

“You did that on purpose.” She tuts and crosses her arms over her chest. “What I’m saying is your big ego is blinding you, and maybe ego glasses will help you to see better. More clearly.”

“Like ego glasses exist. Though I could see what one of our research scientists could do with the idea. It sounds like something Bradley would enjoy.”

“You wouldn’t use your brilliant brain to invent them yourself?”

“I am brilliant, but thanks to a frivolous lawsuit I don’t have time.” My eyes rake over her body. I wish I had a pair of X-ray glasses to see her luscious curves again. “At least the opposing counsel is hot. Ranger isn’t as much fun to look at, but he wears nice ties.”

Jayne bursts out laughing. It’s loud and raucous, like a guy watching a football game, and I can’t help but smile.

“You do like me,” I say.

“I wouldn’t go that far. You’re the one who called me hot.” She studies me with a twinkle in her eye. “You amuse me, even though you’re an egomaniac. But that only gives me more insight into you.”

“Oh, please share. This should be interesting.”

She gives me the once-over, making me think she’s imagining me naked. “My guess is you stole Orchid from my client. Your ego is so big you’d think you could get away with it.”

My blood heats. So much for my imagination, but then I remember Cliff mentioned she’s all about work. That means I’m the enemy, so I get why she said that. Still, it bothers me. “Once you see how much evidence we have in our favor, you’ll be sorry you picked their side.”

“Are you going to try to use your strong-arm tactics on me, Mr. Lowe?”

I can’t tell if she’s joking or not, but the edge to her voice tells me she’s not. “Won’t be necessary. We have all the proof that we need. No need for dirty tricks on our part. You’ll see.”

The elevator shudders to a halt, and the doors slide open.

Jayne switches her briefcase to the other hand. “This is me.”

I check the floor number. “Me too.”

“You have to be joking?” She storms out onto the thick carpet of the hallway and looks at the room numbers on the wall. At first, she turns left and then spins around to the right and curses under her breath.

I follow her. “What’s your room number?”

“As if I’d tell you.”

“Ah, come on, Jayne, don’t you want to know if we’re neighbors?”

“No, I don’t.”

As we carry on, an elderly lady using a walking stick rounds the corner. Her pace is slow, and her mouth moves like she’s talking.

I quicken my stride to catch up to Jayne. “Maybe we have interconnecting rooms.”

“Even if we do, my door won’t be opened. Not in your lifetime anyway, buddy.”

“Really, Jayne. What’s that saying that the lady doth protest too much?”

“Not this lady.” She stops and moves to the side, giving the woman room to pass by. “Here you go, ma’am.”
