Megan jogged off stage toward Jax.

“Can’t feel my tongue,” she mumbled, almost unintelligibly. “Lipth tingle.”

He pulled her to where there was more light, Tamara and Lisa following, holding the light from their phones to her face. “Your lips are tingling? Is that what you said?” Jax asked, cupping her face and checking it out. “Open your mouth.”

“Can you breathe okay?” Lisa asked.

She nodded. “Yeth but tongue feelth big.”

“May be a little swollen,” he said. “I’m calling the paramedics.”

She nodded as he placed the call to the team on standby as per the requirements of the venue. Tamara pulled her to a nearby chair. “Breathe, honey,” she said. “Anything else? Lightheaded? Did you eat anything unusual?”

Megan shook her head. As he was about to let Nelly and Taylor know, he heard Taylor’s voice on the speaker. “Looks like our girl Megan’s had herself a little emergency.” The crowd booed. “But we’re not going to let that ruin our night, isn’t that right, Baltimore?” The crowd cheered. “Let’s see if we can get Nelly to break one of her drumsticks, shall we?” The crowd was hysterical. Nelly was notorious for getting so engrossed in her drums that she’d break a stick or two, and then throw the broken sticks, which had TNT’s logo on them, to the crowd. Always the show-woman, she pulled an extra stick out of her cleavage and began to jam out until sweat poured down her face. Taylor joined in as the crowd sang the last song.

Jax held Megan’s hand while the paramedics checked her vitals, breathing a sigh of relief when they looked her over and concluded it was nothing urgent. “Looks like some sort of reaction. Maybe you ate something you’re allergic to. I’m going to give you a shot of Benadryl, but it’s going to make you very sleepy very fast.”

“Do it,” Jax answered for the unnaturally mute Megan. “Ben and Jason, get the girls back to the hotel as soon as it’s over. No hanging around. I’m leaving with Megan,” he said into his lapel.

“Anything we can do to help?” Tamara asked.

“No, just stay here. Maybe grab anything she may have left and take it back to the hotel with you.”

The paramedics gave her a shot and advised her to go to the doctor or the hospital if it worsened or if she had any trouble breathing.

“Come on,” Jax said, shuffling Megan out of the enormous arena through the downstairs corridor which lead to the back entrance.

“You okay?”

“Tired,” she said in a muffled voice, her eyes looking heavy and her feet sluggish. “Everything’s in slow motion.”

The drug was hitting her fast. He lifted her up into his arms before her eyes shut and she was out.

Chapter 18

PRESENT DAY

“Where are we?” Megan asked when she opened her eyes, her mouth dry and her throat burned. “Water?”

“Are you feeling better?” Jax asked, reaching for a water bottle and holding it up to her lips.

“Yes but . . .” She looked around. “This isn’t the hotel.”

“No, it’s not. We’re in Newport, Rhode Island.”

“Geography was never my strongest subject, but didn’t we pass New York?” she asked, sitting up. The last thing she remembered was feeling loopy while holding on to Jax’s hand as they walked out of the arena to the car. The next leg of the tour was in New York, not Rhode Island.

“We have a few days before the New York concert and a buddy of mine has this house. Called him last night and he let us borrow it.”

“And the girls? The crew?”

“No one knows. Only Joey.”

“Jackson! They’ll worry.”

“They know you’re fine but they don’t know where you are. I don’t want anyone to know.”

“Why not? And how’d we get here?” she asked, sitting up higher, moving the hair from her face.
