Promise me you’ll always have fun.
Am I happy? I ask myself every day.
You came into my world and made all the gray go away.
You lighted my life and I never want to be dimmed again.
Even if we never meet again, thank you for this weekend.
Thank you for letting me be me.
I wish things were different . . . I wish you’d never left.
But always, I’ll promise you, I’ll never be the same again.
Megan chewed on her lower lip while watching him intently. It was by far her favorite song and the most personal.
Would he understand how much he’d always meant to her?

Jax’s heart swelled. It had been so long since he’d felt it beat; it took his breath away. “Play it again.”
“Jax.”
“Again,” he said, and again the words poured out. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be that same guy from all those years ago,” he admitted when it finished playing.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be that girl from all those years ago, either.”
“I don’t care. You’re better.”
“You are too,” she said without missing a beat. “I’m sorry I got you in this mess. I wish things were different.”
He pulled her to him. “It’s not your fault. You have nothing to apologize for. But I do need you to just listen to what I tell you to do. It’s always going to be for your own good.”
“I know.”
“And I may get a little abrasive.”
“I know that too.”
“And maybe a little crazy.”
“Got that also. But I’ll try to be patient,” she said.
“’preciate that, sweetheart.”
“You dumped me,” she whispered. “You broke my heart.” Her eyes welled, but his girl was strong. So she held it back but still gave him shit for leaving her. “You were an asshole. A big one.”
God, she was breaking his own heart right this second.
“I’m sorry. So damn sorry. All these emotions . . . I’m not good at dealing with them.”
“I can tell. I forgive you. But never do that again. You have to promise to stop pulling away from me.”
“I promise,” he said. “And I choose happy too. What you asked me earlier? You do make me happy. You always have. I realized I was an idiot for walking away before all this shit went down and I was going to come tell you, but then Ryan . . .”
Now the tears did actually fall, but they seemed like happy tears. “I love you, Jackson. I think I loved you five years ago too.”
