“You don’t gotta get involved. You just need to not give her any fieldwork,” Joey said, standing up and leaving the room. At the doorway, he turned.

“So, you’re really not going on the tour?”

“No. I’m not needed and the label wanted some of the work we had originally planned scaled back. I’ll just be in the way.”

As he walked out, Joey shook his head, looking disappointed in him. “You’re an idiot, you know that?”

Five years ago, Jax thought, he and Megan had both been at a crossroads in their lives, but now they both had their lives planned out and their chosen paths were so different. Being with her would mean living in fear every time a rabid fan said or did the wrong thing. And he wasn’t sure that was something he could handle. Maybe he had been romanticizing the idea of Megan five years ago. Maybe it wasn’t as magical as he’d been making it out to be.

And maybe he was just being a coward.

Chapter 15

FIVE YEARS EARLIER

“I have not slept on your bed yet,” she said.

“Since you got here, neither have I.” It was the next morning and Jax kissed her nose before moving off the couch. “Tonight, the bed. My neck’s killing me.” He rolled his head from side to side.

Tonight? They hadn’t talked about another day, but no way was she leaving today. “Okay” was her answer as she hopped off the couch. “You want me to make breakfast?”

He pulled her to him by the waist. “No, baby. Never want you in my kitchen again.” He kissed her nose with a chuckle and shuffled her into the bathroom. “Eggs, bacon, coffee okay?”

“Yes. I think between breakfast and my failed attempt at dinner last night, we have most of your fridge cleared.”

He looked inside and agreed. “Tonight we can eat lots of ice cream.”

“Well, at least we’re getting another one of the items of your list done.”

“And a trip to visit my mom, she’s been calling.”

“Oh good, so that’s another one,” she said, fumbling with her shirt.

“You okay?”

“Me? Yeah, fine. Maybe I should go?” she mumbled awkwardly, pointing her thumb over her shoulder.

“Why? No. Stay.”

“To meet your mom?”

“Yeah, sure. Why not? She’s going to love you.”

Love.

Damn.

She was taking it out of context but it made her heart beat a little faster. A little harder. It was way too soon but damn if she didn’t feel something completely new and profound in her chest that she’d never felt before. Not even close.

Yes, she definitely wanted to meet his mother.

“Stop fidgeting, Meg.”

She whipped her head toward Jax, surprised. “No one calls me Meg.”

They were walking up the path to the apartment building where his mother lived. “Sorry. Does it bother you?”
