“Still with the five things game?” he asked, kissing her softly on the cheek and then the lips.

“It’s not a game, it’s my way of helping you.”

“I don’t need help.”

“You had fun yesterday, right? It’s been a while, we can’t stop now. I will loosen you up, Jackson.” She sat up and slipped out of his grip, kissing him on the cheek and then slapping his tight, muscular ass. “Now get out. I’m feeling inspired.”

He chuckled, kissed her one last time, and left to make some calls.

Megan was in her bedroom writing when she heard a sound outside her window. Like pebbles tapping against glass. It was still daylight, and her house was full of people, but she couldn’t think of a reason for any of Jax’s men to be outside her bedroom on the terrace or even in this part of the big estate. Cautiously, she eased out of bed and opened the sheer curtains of the French doors that led to the balcony.

There was nothing on the other side, so she unlocked the door and stepped out to overlook the property. Looking around there was nothing. From her balcony she had an unrestricted view of the ocean and the usual boats passing, but nothing unusual, though the hairs on the back of her neck were standing up. Her phone chirped at that moment and she ran inside and plucked it from the bed without looking at the screen.

“Hello?” she said, padding back to her balcony. “Hello?”

She looked down at the screen.

Unknown Caller

She gasped and her eyes roamed all over the property. Was it a coincidence, the way she felt as if someone was watching her, the phone call happening at the same time? “Hello? Who is this?” There was heavy breathing on the other side, and her hands trembled. “Ryan? Is this you?”

She kept the phone on her ear, waiting. When the caller didn’t say anything and she didn’t see anything she locked the door to her balcony and went in search of Jax.

Annie, Joey’s sister and an employee of ICS, came by the house with boxes of equipment. Like her brother, Annie was an ex-Marine and a computer genius. “Thanks for helping me set up these computers,” Jax grumbled from underneath the desk as he plugged in a PC, three monitors, a printer, and a scanner.

“No problem. Although you didn’t give me much of a choice,” Annie huffed, but she had a smile on her face as she waited for Jax to finish the grunt work.

An hour ago, when Megan had ran downstairs with trembling hands and the phone in her hand, Jax had gone insane wanting security amped and the computers up and running with a top-of-the-line firewall. Joey was out on another job and Jax had barked at Annie to get her ass moving. She’d bitched for a solid minute until he told her who the client was.

“I can’t believe I’m in Megan Cruz’s house. Breathing Megan Cruz’s air. Oh my god, I just sat in Megan Cruz’s chair. I bet she wrote “Great Day” right on this very chair,” Annie said, making herself comfortable in it.

“I really doubt that. She doesn’t write in this room. And please stop referring to her as ‘Megan Cruz,’ it’s weird as shit.”

“Huge fan.”

“I see that.” Jax stuck his head out of the room. “Baby!” he yelled. “Can you come here for a sec?”

“Baby?” Annie said. “Oh my god, that is so cute!”

A moment later, a tired and worried but beautiful and sweet Megan staggered into the room. “We have a top-of-the-line intercom system, we both have cell phones, plus you have legs. Why are you yelling like a lunatic?”

Ignoring her complaint, Jax took her hand and pulled her forward. “Someone I want you to meet.”

Annie stood up excitedly and walked around the desk. “Meg, this is Annie Clad, Joey’s sister. She works with us and helped me set up the computer. I’ve known her forever.”

Annie cocked an eyebrow and elbowed Jax. “Helped you? You didn’t even know what a USB plug was.” She rolled her eyes and waved him off, extending her hand to Megan. “Hi, it’s so nice to meet you. I’m a huge fan.”

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you too. I didn’t know Joey had a sister.”

“Yep. They keep me holed up in the office.” Annie glared at Jax. “I should be out in the field like the rest of the guys.”

“Annie . . .” Jax warned.

“Looks like I have not one but two overprotective brothers. Anyway, I guess I should be heading out, I have a date tonight. It was really great to meet you, Megan. Jax, everything is programmed and ready, call me if you need me.”

“Please come by for dinner,” Megan said, “or better yet, when Nelly and Taylor come over to hang out, I’ll call you so you can meet them too.”
