It would be easy to get lost in this woman, he thought. But after seeing her admit how scared she actually was, he needed to focus. He could comfort her, but to cross the line into something further—this wasn’t the time or place to rekindle something that might have been. Maybe once this Ryan fucker was caught, Jax could see if things were still as explosive as they were five years ago.

Fuck it. That was bullshit—of course it would be explosive.

And right now he couldn’t be five minutes without touching her. He stroked her cheek with his thumb. “I should go, Meg.”

She twined her fingers with his and brought his knuckles to her lips. “No you shouldn’t.” Her voice was low and sultry and she said it while kissing each knuckle.

“I’m here to make you safe.”

“When you’re close, like this, I feel safe.” Her hands snaked into his beard and he moaned at the way her nails gently scratched his skin. He pulled her closer, her tits pressed against his chest. His hand snuck under her shirt and he rubbed her back.

“You’re making it impossible to stay away, baby.” His face hovered so close to her neck. “I’m trying to be good.”

“Don’t try so hard.”

“You’re scared,” he whispered into her neck. “You have a stalker.”

She sat across his lap and there was no way in hell she couldn’t feel his cock. The way her ass wiggled in his arms . . . his self-control was waning.

“Right now, I’m not thinking about the stalker,” she whispered, bringing her face up to his, her lips a whisper away.

At that moment, her phone rang, shattering the moment with the sound of a popular song he’d heard on the radio countless times. He wondered if it was one of hers.

“Ignore it,” she said, her big eyes glazed with lust, and he was about to do just that when it rang again. From the corner of his eye he saw the caller ID light up.

Unknown Caller

Reality hit Jax like a bucket of cold water. To the balls.

Reaching over her to fetch the phone from the table, he showed her the screen, his own mind sifting through various scenarios. Was it Ryan? Were they being watched right now? How quickly could he shield Megan and reach for his gun if shit went down? Two targets in the middle of acres of land where no one would hear a thing . . .

Megan sat stiff against him, while he slid his finger over the phone’s answer screen. She spoke into the phone. “Hello?” There was breathing on the other end of the line.

“Who is this? Hello?” Her voice was shaky. Jax’s grip on Megan tightened. Was she thinking the same things he was?

He grabbed the phone from her hand. “Hello?” The person was still on the line, he could hear breathing and movement. “Don’t hide behind a phone. Who is this? Man the hell up and talk.”

Jax stood, Megan in his arm, and gently placed her back on her chair. He looked around the backyard, but all that was visible was her large yard and then the dark ocean. This is the kind of shit that would make him regret starting things up again—being distracted. She had the ability to thoroughly distract him.

Everything around them intensified as they waited for the caller to say something.

Where they had been enjoying the quiet lull of the ocean and a calm breeze just a moment ago, now every crash of waves or ruffle of leaves in the night air made his skin prick and put his defenses on guard. He wanted to yell and demand that the person speak up, though he knew provoking the caller was reckless. “I’ll give you one last chance before I hang up. Who is this?” His voice was strong and commanding but it wasn’t hostile, even if hostility was the emotion he was currently feeling. The person on the other line didn’t speak, but the sound of his heavy breathing grew louder. As if he was exerting himself on the other end. And then, a few seconds later, the call ended. Jax’s hand was on the weapon by his side as he continued to look around. Her mansion was so massive it was difficult to secure it by himself.

“It could’ve been anyone, Jax. A telemarketer, a wrong number.” Her voice gave her away. She didn’t believe for one second it was a wrong number. Not for one damn second.

Unless the caller was jogging when he called, it wasn’t too difficult to figure out what the heavy breathing was all about.

“Bullshit.” Jax pulled out his weapon.

“You had that on you all this time?”

“This is always on me.” He opened the door to her house. “Ass inside, babe.”

She looked around the backyard as if she too was trying to figure out if the caller was watching them. “Now,” he barked.

She walked inside and he locked the door behind her. “I’ll lock up,” he said. He needed to do a parameter sweep before bed and make sure everything was copacetic, then he needed to call Joey about tracing the call. “Good night, Megan.”

“Good night?” She looked crestfallen. “But, I . . . I mean—”
