“The photo has you and Nell blacked out. It freaks me out. If something happened to either of you two . . .” Her eyes watered, and her voice came out like a croak. Jax pulled her in close and rubbed small circles down her back. Nothing would happen. He and his team had been working out a plan to deal with the tour over the last few days, but she needed to have this conversation with her girls. She had made it clear to him she didn’t like to be told what to do, so he sat back and let her do her thing. But he stayed just close enough so she understood he was there for her. “ . . . I don’t know what I’d do.”
Joey piped in: “I don’t think the photo was intended to suggest he wants to hurt you two. I think he just wants Megan to know he’s all about her.”
“Honey, don’t you worry about me or Nell. We’re big girls. We can handle ourselves and the truth is, nothing weird has been happening to us. We’re both just worried about you, since it’s all been about you. I think Tarzan’s right about that. Plus, you can’t just stay holed up in here.”
“Meg, sweetheart—” he began.
“I know you’re here and I know I’m safe, but there’s a crazy guy that wants me for God knows what.”
“You think there’s a big safety issue, Rambo? Can you keep our girl safe so we can go on tour?”
“I think we’re fine. We’ve got it covered,” Jax said, his lips on Megan’s temple as he ran his palm soothingly down her back.
“Then we move forward as planned. We can do any rehearsal or PR here in the house. And how about the Fionas concert?” Taylor asked.
“Shit, I completely forgot about that.”
“The Fionas?” Jax asked Megan. “You can’t go to a concert,” he said. “It’s one thing to go out to dinner, it’s another one to go out to a concert.”
“I know.” She ran her hand through her hair, a sad look on her face. “My friends Elle and Ro from The Fionas are in town. I always go catch their show when they’re here.”
“We always see them when they’re in town,” Taylor whined.
“I don’t think it’ll be possible this time,” Megan said sadly. God, Jax hated this. He frowned thinking about the nightmare protecting Megan in a crowd of a thousand people would be. Planning for her own tour was going to be hard enough. “We can’t secure a concert in this short notice,” he said, talking mostly to himself.
“I know . . .” She blew out a deep breath.
“I’m sorry, Meg. I can’t risk you getting hurt.” His throat constricted, and he had an overpowering surge of emotions. Not caring who was around to hear, he admitted, “You’re too important to me.”
“Jax,” she sighed, closing her eyes at the feel of his palm against her cheekbone.
The world faded to just the two of them until Taylor spoke.
“Oh . . . I’m loving this.” She had a big loopy smile on her face as she twirled her finger at them. “Anyway, how about dinner? You skip the concert and just meet us for dinner? If I can convince them to go to a quiet place, one you can check out beforehand?”
“That sounds reasonable,” Joey said. “We’ll check it out, it’ll be okay, man. Give her some slack. Sitting alone in this house with you for weeks must be a pain in the ass for the poor girl.”
Her big brown eyes were begging him to make it work even if she was hesitant. Even if at her core she was afraid, she was putting her trust in his ability to protect her.
How could he deny her? They were being reasonable.
“It’s that important to you, babe?”
“My friends are important to me.”
“Then, we’ll make it happen. Just tell me where by Thursday, okay?”
“Thank you, Jax.” Megan said brightly. “And about our tour, if you and Nells don’t want to cancel, then Jax is going to go with us and he’s going to make sure everything is secure. Is that cool with you?”
“I’ve added security that I can assign to you and to Nelly,” Jax added.
Taylor nodded in agreement. “Of course that’s cool with me, Megan. Plus, you have Paisley to protect you.” Taylor said, patting the puppy’s head.
“Paisley?” Joey snorted.
“I’ve been in Japan launching my new clothing line. Paisley’s the hot thing over there and I’ve seen every pattern of paisley known to man. Everything’s starting to look like paisley.”
“You can’t name him Paisley,” Jax snorted. “It’s a male dog.”
