Shaking her head, she waved him away. “I’m not fishing.”
“Why not?” He held out a rod and took some bait. She took a step back. “Gross. No thanks.”
He laughed and dangled the bait closer to her face. “Are you afraid of a little bait?”
She squealed and moved back. “No!” She giggled harder. “Jax! Stay away.” He put the rod down, stepping slowly toward her with the bait in his hand as she continued moving back. “Stay away!” And when he took another step forward, she took off running. Luckily they had the boat to themselves except for the captain and a crewman, and they were both in the control room upstairs. With his free arm, he swept her by the waist and lifted her up, her feet dangling underneath her, her back to his front. “You better not get fish guts on me, Jackson,” she threatened, but she was laughing so hard he could barely understand her, causing him to break out in a fit of laughter too.
When was the last time he’d laughed like that?
It had been a long time. Years, likely.
Then there was the fact she was wiggling her bikini-clad ass on his cock. His palm was splayed against her flat stomach, his pinky finger too low, too close to her pussy. How would it feel if he were to slide his hand into her white little bikini bottom? Would she be bare? Would she be wet? A small gasp escaped her throat when he realized how tightly and intimately he was holding her, and he quickly released her.
They were just too close and she was too naked and warm.
This wasn’t part of the plan.
Reluctantly, he pulled back from temptation and put her down before stepping back. Distraction was his enemy. Last time he’d lost focus on a mission, most of his platoon was killed. Not wanting to ruin the effort and expense it had taken her to plan this for him, he said, “Tell you what, I’ll put the bait on and you just hold the rod.”
“I can do that,” she said in a hoarse voice, and he cocked his head to the side.
She can do what? What was the question?
“The rod. I can hold the rod,” she continued.
The rod? What?
It began slowly but within moments she was shaking from laughter. “You are making me freakin’ crazy! Listen to me, I sound like a lunatic.” She shook her head and wiped tears from her eyes. “You asked me if I wanted to hold the fishing rod, I said I can do that.”
“You’re going to drive me crazy.” Jax was not surprised to hear the strain in her voice. Not after the images flashing through his mind of her holding a different rod.
She shook her head and yanked the fishing pole from his hand.
He sighed. “Come on, woman.” He sat on one of the fishing chairs that faced the ocean toward the back of the boat and hooked the bait on. “Have you ever fished before?”
“Not really.”
“Okay let me show you how to cast.”
For the next ten minutes he showed her how to hold the rod and the fishing line, when and how to release the line, and what to click on the expensive reel.
“Now what?” She asked once her line was in the water and she was sitting on the chair beside him. The Bahamian sun shone brightly over them, and there wasn’t even a light breeze. The boat barely rocked, and the only noise that could be heard was the commotion they were making.
Once both lines were in the water, he sat back in his chair. “Now we just wait.”
“Just wait?”
“That’s the beauty of fishing. You just wait for the fish to do all the work.”
“How will I know when I catch something?”
“You’ll know. There will be a tug on the line.”
She sat back and held the pole. “If you say so.”

Megan was in the middle of the ocean alone with Jax. It felt surreal, especially since she could physically see his hard shell melting away and the gooey center slowly revealing itself. He had put on a baseball cap and it was tilted down, covering his eyes. He was the picture of relaxation. There was no flirtation going on, just two people who felt comfortable enough with each other not to have to fill the time with awkward conversation.
