“Just trust me,” she said, lacing her hands through his and leading him inside a hangar and then into a private jet. When she touched him, he couldn’t deny her—and even if he could, he didn’t want to.
“This is very different than the last time, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it is, but it’s still an adventure. Plus, this is a plane not a helicopter.”
“Where are we going?” he asked.
She winked, her smile huge. “It’s a surprise.”
They sat across from each other in the jet. She wore a white cover-up thing that was a little sheer, her white bikini peeking through the fabric, along with cutoff shorts and flip-flops that exposed her baby blue nails. When she ordered a Bloody Mary, he took the opportunity to text Joey and let him know what was going on, just in case he was needed. Also, he wanted her house monitored while they were out.
“I’d have liked to have spoken with the pilot and seen the flight plans. Check out that there’s no—”
“This is safe, Jax. Don’t worry. If I’m with you,” she shrugged, “I’m safe.”
He liked that she thought being with him was safe even if he wasn’t so sure how safe things were at the moment. With a crazy stalker on the loose?
Resting his head back, he watched her reach into an oversized purse and rummage through it until she found earbuds. She popped them into her ears and closed her eyes while holding on to the armrest with a death grip. He wanted to reach for her hands and hold them, but he schooled his desire and focused on the Miami skyline as they took flight.
He hadn’t been lying, he couldn’t start something up with her while she was in danger. He needed to focus on her safety not her beautiful thick hair, or soft skin, or delicious thighs in those shorts. . . .
Judging by the twenty-minute duration of the flight, Jax deduced they were likely in Nassau or Freeport. When they landed he unbuckled his seat belt and then reached over and plucked the earbuds from her ears, startling her.
“W-what?”
“We’re here.”
She shook her head. “Oh, uh, okay. I fell asleep.”
“Picked up on that. Come on.”
Taking her hand, he helped her to her feet. As soon as they stepped out of the plane the sun and heat enveloped them and he was momentarily blinded from the sudden light. He looked over to see Megan adjusting her wig and putting on her sunglasses. “Ready?”
“Yep.”
“Welcome to the Bahamas. Freeport, more specifically.” She pulled him to the end of the tarmac. “Come on.”
After the surprisingly quick trip through customs, she hailed them a cab outside the small airport. “Private plane but we’re getting a cab?”
“Yep. I didn’t want to make too many plans, you know, just in case.”
His grip on her hand tightened. “Just in case someone would find out and come after you?”
She shivered and shook her head, then composed herself. “Nope, not today,” she said, pasting a fake smile on her face. “No crazy stalker conversation today. Let’s go. Chop chop. We have a captain waiting for us.”
“A captain? So where exactly are we going?”
“Deep-sea fishing. I chartered a boat for a few hours.” When his brow creased she quickly added, “You still love fishing, right? That was like your thing. I thought that would be one of the five things you don’t ordinarily do, and if you do do it ordinarily, I figured you didn’t ordinarily do it in Freeport.” She inhaled. “That was a tongue twister. I’m nervous.”
“I see that.” He smiled. “I haven’t gone fishing in years. And, yes, I still love it. And why are you nervous?”
“I want it to be fun for you.”
“It will be.”
An hour and fifteen minutes later, they were sitting in the middle of the ocean in a big fishing boat, nothing around them but the clear blue ocean. He looked over his shoulder and found Megan laying on her stomach, listening to music, her wig long gone. She looked relaxed and fresh, so different from a few days ago when he’d found her hiding in her closet, and light-years away from the sheltered, unhappy girl he’d originally met. This was the Meg he’d fallen so fast and hard for all those years ago.
He tugged out her earbuds, startling her, and pulled her up. “Come on.”
