“Okay, fine,” Joey said as Jax ran back to where he’d just been a few minutes ago. “Done!” Joey yelled. “All nearby trains halted.”
When there were only forty-five seconds on the timer, Jax set the bomb in a corner and then ran back up as fast as he could, saying a prayer on the way up that the bitch’s bomb-making skills were subpar.

“No!” Megan yelled from inside a car as the earth shook underneath her. She clawed out of Ben’s grip trying to get out of the car, but he wouldn’t let her go. “No!” she cried, a heart-wrenching sob escaping her lips. He was dead. He had a bomb in his hands, he had to have been dead, right?
No, it just couldn’t be possible.
The police, firefighters, and ambulances started to arrive at the arena and people were forced to leave the area while they investigated the situation. There was some smoke but there hadn’t been any great massive explosion as she suspected a bomb would make.
“I need to go see what’s going on,” Jason said. “But you need to stay here.”
He called Nelly and Taylor over. “I promise you, Megan, if anyone can give you answers quickly it will be me, but if you don’t stay here with Nelly and Taylor I can’t leave. Promise me you’ll stay here.”
“I need to know wh-what . . .” And she dropped to the floor and began to cry.
“Then promise me you’ll stay put.”
“Megan, honey, breathe for us,” Taylor said, as Megan took in a deep shaky breath and broke out in sobs. “Go. We’ve got her. Hurry back.”
Jason went toward the arena to get answers. Megan felt as if she was going to throw up or faint or . . . she didn’t even know. The hole in her heart was too big and she couldn’t catch her breath. “In and out, Meg. In and out,” Nelly said through her own sobs.
Wiping tears out of her eyes using the top of her shirt, Megan looked up and from afar she could see a figure pushing the paramedics out of the way. “Oh my god!” Megan yelled and set out in a sprint. “Jax! Jackson!” she said, running to him at full speed. Bracing himself for impact he caught her in his arms.
“You fucking crazy man!” she said, raining kisses on his face full of soot. “Are you okay?”
“No,” he groaned and she slid down his body, taking a good look at him for the first time. He was full of scrapes and scratches, a deep laceration on his arm, and he was gripping his leg—his damaged leg. “But I’ll live.”
“Paramedic! Over here!” she yelled over his shoulder and two men came running with a stretcher.
“It’s over, sweetheart.”
“You saved me again, Jax,” she said, helping him onto the gurney, her tears still flowing and her lips quivering. “Let’s get you all fixed up so that I can kick your ass for giving me a heart attack. Don’t you ever run into a building with a bomb again!”
“I promise I won’t,” he said, as the paramedics wheeled him to the ambulance. “That could be one of your five things I wouldn’t normally do.” He tried to laugh but gripped his ribs in discomfort.
Chapter 20
PRESENT DAY
“The Bahamas was the first thing,” she said, ticking off with her fingers. “Then the planetarium, followed by our alien abduction sex.”
“Three seems like enough, don’t you think?” he said, smiling back at her.
“No. I don’t think so.” She held out five fingers. “Five things you wouldn’t normally do. Not three. Five.”
“Okay, so what do you have in mind? Because I have two ideas, but you have to be brave. How brave are you feeling, sweetheart?’
“With you by my side? The bravest.”
“That’s what I like to hear. Grab your purse.”
“Where we going?”
“It’s a surprise.”
“Wait, what about Rambo?” she asked. Rambo, who was fully healed, was wagging his tail and looking up at them expectantly.
