“Slipped through. But the shit is all speculation, speculation I know is fact, but we need proof.”
“Hear you loud and clear brother.”
Jax paced back and forth, driving Megan crazy. She still couldn’t believe it, but it made sense the more she thought about it. “I feel so betrayed. I was nice to her, I gave her a job.”
“No, you’re a good person. A trusting person.”
“What’s the plan? What are we going to do?”
“Right now? Just wait on Joey. He knows what we need to make an arrest that sticks.”
The rest of the evening was just a waiting game. Megan ate half a tub of Nutella and chewed her fingernails raw.
When they woke up the next day and headed to New York for the concert, Megan was a ball of raw nerves. There was nothing they could do until Joey got more information, and that meant going onstage and performing for a sold-out crowd with a crazy stalker right under their noses. All while looking Tamara straight in the face during prep and pretending she didn’t know Tamara was trying to hurt her.
It was going to take major acting on Megan’s part.
Chapter 19
PRESENT DAY
“Hey!” Joey said over the phone. “We got her, man. Bitch’s going down.”
“Wait. I can’t hear you.” Jax signaled Ben, letting him know he was taking a call. Ben gave him a thumbs-up and Jax moved to a quieter area. “Talk to me, Josef.”
“I’m in her house right now, brother. It’s beyond fucking disturbing. She has a cage with live mice. Also, a big motherfucking photo of Megan with mice drawn on her . . . eating her face. There’re sketches of Megan everywhere. There’s also photos everywhere of TNT before Megan became the singer. They have hearts drawn around them and the new ones, the ones with Megan, she’s cut out. The cutout pieces are crumbled and in the rat cages. Disturbing as fuck. The chick’s clearly mental and obviously has it in for your girl. And not surprisingly, I found a box of rat poison under the sink. There’s also a sketch of Megan’s house with entrances and windows on it. Looks pretty accurate.”
“Damn,” Jax grunted, running a hand down his face. “I have Jason keeping an eye on her under the guise that we’re trying to keep all the staff safe. I want to bring her in so badly, man, but it’s not enough. I want her down for a long fucking time. Plus, I’m assuming you broke in, so, you need to have a hell of a good reason to go begging Martinez for a search warrant to make your findings legit. This is all good shit, at least we know we have to keep an eye on the bitch, but we need more. What is she planning on doing? I’ll bet my right nut she’s planning something big. I feel it, there’s more coming.”
“Hold your fucking horses, man. I got more. She’s got a basement. You know what the bitch has in her basement? TNT. Ironic, isn’t it? She has C4 and coke bottles and fucking internet printouts on how to make fucking bombs. Recipes!”
“You telling me she’s been on the road with us while carrying bombs?”
“Looks that way. Fingerprints came back from the brush Jason overnighted me—they match the original letter, plus the box with the rat.”
“Jesus Christ. We need Ryan to confess. He needs to point us to Tamara so we can get that search warrant,” Jax said. “Call Martinez. Ask him to let you talk to Ryan yourself. Get him to talk.”
“You can’t just sit on this information, though.” Joey’s voice was tense. “If she has a bomb with her, a whole bunch of people are in danger right now, not just Megan.”
“Go handle Martinez. Get that search warrant. I’ll figure things out here.”
“Careful, Jackson.”
“Always am, Josef. Always am,” he said, shutting off the phone. By the song playing in the background he knew there was still four more songs left, which was about thirty minutes of showtime. Tamara wanted her band back, there was no way she’d make a move on Megan while they were on stage. Megan was safe for now; he just had to keep her that way.
Midway through the next song, Jason skidded to a stop a few yards away.
Shit.
“Jason, what are you doing here? Where’s Tamara?” Jax asked.
“Slipped out,” he panted. “My com is on the fritz. Lost visual on her nine minutes ago.”
Jax’s mind cleared to just the mission. Throwing Jason an extra communication device, he called Ben from the radio. “Ben, eyes on Megan at all times. Jason, you take the east side, I’ll take the west.”
Jax reached to his side and felt his Sig Sauer. He couldn’t take it out in the middle of Madison Square Garden. He went room to room and there was no sign of Tamara anywhere. “Anything?” he asked Jason.
“Negative, boss.”
