“Drove most of the night. I need to keep you safe. I also need a breather so that I can figure out a plan. This will give me a couple of days where I don’t have to be looking over our shoulder and use the time to figure out what our next move will be.”
“Okay,” she shrugged, taking in the view from the double glass door leading to the water. “I can live with that.”
“Good. How do you feel?”
“I’m groggy, mostly. My head feels all cloudy and I’m sleepy but not tired.”
“That’s the antihistamine. How about your tongue and lips?”
“That’s okay. Feels back to normal. Must’ve been something I ate.”
“Ever happened before? Are you allergic to anything?”
“No, never, and not that I know of.”
“Didn’t think so. By the way, your parents called a few times. They saw the news.”
“Damn, does everything have to be plastered on television?”
“Pretty much par for the course when you’re the lead singer of TNT.”
“I asked your mom about your allergies and she said the same thing. That you’re not allergic to anything. Also, it looks like Rambo may pull through. They’ve been able to stop all the blood loss; now it’s just a waiting game. He’s still very lethargic.”
“Oh, thank goodness.” She let out a deep breath, then took the water bottle from his hand and drank down half the bottle.
“It’s not an allergy, Meg. Someone tampered with something you ate.”
“No.” She looked at him. “No,” she repeated. “I just felt bad, is all.”
“Too many coincidences, sweetheart. Your dog and now you? Someone messed with your food.”
“I didn’t eat anything unusual. The restaurant we stopped at on the way to Baltimore we went to on the fly. I don’t think the cook would be in on it. It just makes no sense.”
“I need to put the pieces together.”
“I’m going to take a quick shower,” she said, distractedly.
* * *
“You feeling better?” he asked, when she came back into the room and sat beside him on the bed.
“Yeah, taking a shower and washing all the product out of my hair made me feel a lot better.”
“Good,” he said, kissing her shoulder, but before he could pull away, she reached for him and kissed his pec where his tattoo was. “I still can’t believe someone poisoned Rambo.”
“I know, baby. But he’s doing better.” He brought her in close and kissed her forehead. “We’re going to figure this out and make you safe.”
“I know. It’s just . . . it’s all so crazy. All I want to do is sing. Dealing with all this was not part of the plan.”
“It never is. Unfortunately it comes with the territory.” She laid down, her head on his lap, and he put aside his thoughts for a moment in order to comfort her. “I love you, Megan.
She smiled wide, looking up at him “I love you too, Jax,” she said with a smile as her stomach began to rumble.
“That’s kind of embarrassing.”
“My tongue has been deep inside of you and I’ve licked every inch of your body; I think we’re passed feeling embarrassed about anything, don’t you think?”
“Maybe.” She shrugged. “Then I’ll go ahead and tell you right now, I’d kill for a big juicy steak. Medium. And a baked potato with all the fixin’s and corn on the cob. Since you said not to be embarrassed I’ll also tell you that I’ll probably lick my fingers at some point and have to undo the top button on my jeans.”
