She had only opened her bakery a few months ago, but it had already become a hot spot in Boston. Everyone was talking about Cleo’s. The papers all had rave reviews and popular bloggers had shared photos of the pastries and the bakery itself, which was just as charming as Cleo’s culinary creations.
Cleo had found the perfect corner spot on a popular street to rent. After giving it a great deal of thought, and a lot of persuasion from Kenny, she had agreed to let Jonas and Mae be investors, at least until she got her footing. And boy, had she.
She must have felt his gaze because she spotted him through the window and waved for him to come inside, her smile growing even bigger. He pushed open the door and took in a deep breath. The air was filled with the sweet smells of cake baking. He licked his lips as he looked around the bakery. Every table was full of customers enjoying their morning coffee and pastries.
Cleo wiped her hands on a towel before she approached him from behind the counter. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close before giving her a soft kiss on the lips. She smelled like blueberry muffins. He loved that about her. He could always count on her smelling like dessert.
“This is a surprise,” she said.
“I had a little time to kill before heading to the airport to meet the team.”
“Mmm. I’m going to miss you, you know.”
“I think you’ll be too busy running the most popular bakery in the city to miss me.”
She turned and looked around the bakery as if having a pinch-me moment. She leaned back and lay her head against his chest.
“I sometimes can’t believe it,” she whispered.
“Well, believe it,” replied Kenny.
He wrapped his hands around her and placed them gently on her growing belly. It had been a few months since she had told him she was pregnant. They had been standing in this very bakery before it had opened and become what it was now. It was the happiest moment of his life.
As excited as she was, Kenny knew she was a little scared to be embarking on motherhood and her own business. He did everything he could to reassure her every day because he believed in her. Because she was worthy of someone believing in her full force. Because she was the mother of their baby boy. Because he loved her.
He planned on letting her know just how much as soon as he got back from his away game. With a solitaire diamond ring.
This is the end of Kenny and Cleo's love story.
