Cas and Ada had talked him off the ledge, if only barely, and Cas had taken to pestering him about it ever since.
“He just needs to do it,” Ada said, watching Cas’s continued struggle. “When you know, you know.”
She checked one more pocket and, finally, unearthed her ID card.
“Does that mean I should just do it, then?” Cas asked. She raised an eyebrow, a somewhat successful attempt at making her very serious comment seem humorous.
Ada pressed her lips together, a failed effort to contain her smile. “Are you thinking about it?”
“Only every day.”
“Me, too.”
It wasn’t going to happen today. Probably wasn’t going to happen for a while. But the promise of this, of forever, was making Cas giddy.
Cas leaned in, her lips a breath away from Ada’s. “I love you.”
Cas felt more than saw Ada’s smile. “I love you, too.” Ada kissed her once, twice, before she pulled back, eyes bright. “Now, let’s go before Tatum kills us for being late because we were making out.”
“Again,” Cas added, and Ada laughed.
“Exactly.”
Together, they opened the door and crossed the threshold, the late morning sun on their backs. And if you asked Cas, it felt like the perfect way to take their next step forward.
