Oh shit. Wiping the drool from the side of my mouth, I go to respond. Just then a call comes through, looking down, I see its Atti.
“Hello.” I say, hearing growling coming from the phone.
“Lux. You okay?” He asks.
“She better fucking be.” I hear Cade say.
“Yeah.” I say.
“Why didn’t you text Stone back?” He asked me.
“Sorry, I was just thinking of something and got a little distracted.” I say as my voice cracks a little.
“What the hell did you text her, man.” I hear chuckling.
“We will be home soon,” he says.
After getting off the phone with Atticus I must have fallen asleep. In my sleepy haze, I roll over in bed to check the time and a scream rips from my throat. At the end of my bed, is the shadow of someone standing there.
Chapter Twenty-Three
CADE
Walking into my room, I slam the door. I’m still pissed off that she fucking asked about my parents. That’s a hard limit for me. I lost both of mine the night of my tenth birthday.
I remember sitting on the couch, looking out the window, waiting to see their headlights. That’s why when I saw the lights pulling up, I raced outside to greet them, only to see two police officers step out of the car. They walked over just as uncle Kevin came out.
“Excuse us, we are looking for Kevin Rodriguez.” The male officer says.
“What can I help you with?” He responded, placing a hand on my shoulder.
“Is there somewhere we can talk in private?” The officer asks, looking down at me and back up towards my uncle.
“Yes, of course.” He extends his arm out in a come in gesture.
When we enter the house, we walk into the living room. My uncle excuses me to my room, so I pretend to leave and hide behind the corner.
“Sir, we regret to inform you that your sister and brother in law were killed tonight.” The officer says.
“I see. Can you tell me how they died?” He says.
Why doesn’t he sound sad? Is he happy they died?
“They lost control of their vehicle on Dawson Bridge, resulting in them going through the guard rail. When the car tumbled down the hill, it landed and blew up. I’m sorry for your losses.”
“Thank you for informing me. If you would excuse me, I have a birthday boy who needs to be informed of his parents' passing.” My uncle says, walking the officers to the door.
As the door closes, I walk back out with tears running down my face. I can’t believe they're both gone and not coming back. My uncle walks over to me, puts a hand on my shoulder.
“It's going to be okay. Now wipe those tears off your face. A real man never shows his emotions.”
Wiping my face, I look back up at him.
“What happens now?” I ask him.
“Cade! Where the fuck are you?” Zin’s voice brings me back to the present. I look over at him as he walks into my room and sits on the edge of the bed.
“What? You decide to quit being a dick?” I say, flopping down on my bed.
