“Sorry, Clay!” we say at the same time, our eyes locking.

My hands are sliding up her shirt just as my phone goes off. I let it go, but it rings again.

“Go see what it is,” she says, sitting up in the bed we’ll share tonight.

I grab my cell. “Jude,” I say, sliding my thumb over the screen. “What’s up?”

Jude delivers news I wasn’t expecting to hear.

“Okay, we’ll be right there.” I put my phone in my pocket.

Gillian sits up straighter, seeing the expression on my face. “What is it?”

“Sadie’s dad died.”

“Oh no.” Her hands go to her mouth.

“It’s worse. She just got a notice of sale too. Apparently, her dad hasn’t been paying the mortgage.”

It’s not a total surprise. Everyone knows Sadie’s family farm hasn’t been doing well. It’s smaller and therefore harder to turn a profit. But I don’t think anyone knew it was this bad.

“Oh my god, that’s terrible.” She frowns. “Let me cut this date thing short so we can go.”

I sigh. “I hate doing that to him.”

“He’ll understand. It’s family.”

I nod, still feeling guilty for Clayton. Gillian walks out of the room, and a text message dings on my phone.

Mark my words, they’re engaged by the end of next season.

Have some respect, her dad just died.

Which is why things between them are about to change. I just wanted it out there that I’m calling it.

Noted. Asshole.

Wanting my brother to find love? I only want the best for you monogamous idiots.

One day. Mark my words. I’m calling it.

You’re going to lose, brother.

Gillian walks into the room. “Come on, let’s go. This is why I’ll be happy when we’re on the ranch.” She walks back out of the room.

Sometimes I wonder how I got so lucky to win her twice. Mom must be looking out for me.
