“That’s too much,” I protested.
He just shook his head. “You need to eat more.”
I looked up, locking eyes with Maddox’s amber ones. His expression was completely unreadable as he took me in.
“Mad, Hayden’s pre-med,” Knox began. “She wants to be a doctor.”
There was a flicker of something I couldn’t discern in those amber depths.
“A noble pursuit,” Maddox said, taking a sip of red wine.
“You’ll finally have someone to geek out with over all your science journals,” Knox said with a grin.
I sat up straighter at that. “Which ones do you like?”
Maddox shifted slightly in his seat. “I have a particular interest in nanoscience and nanomedicine.”
The first genuine smile spread across my face. “Interested in the treatment of cancer?”
His brows lifted in appreciation. “Yes. I am.”
“God help us. No science talk at the dinner table,” Easton grumbled from his seat next to Maddox.
The urge to stick my tongue out at him was so strong.
Cillian leaned back in his chair at the head of the table. “And what would you like to talk about?”
Easton’s gaze shot to Cillian, his eyes going hot. “How about what an unbelievably moronic idea this is? One that’s going to get us all killed?”
“East,” Knox warned.
Easton’s furious stare swept to Knox. “You know. Better than anyone what you’re risking. You can’t expect me to just sit by and watch.”
Easton shoved back from the dining table and stalked out of the room.
“Not dramatic at all,” Cillian muttered.
“Not helping, Cill,” Maddox said quietly.
I looked around the table. What idea was going to get them all killed? I was starting to wonder if Fiona was right. Maybe these guys were mixed up in something I didn’t want any part of.
Cillian turned his focus to me. “I apologize for our brother’s behavior.”
I swallowed hard. “It’s not your fault. His actions are his own.”
Cillian cut into his steak. “True, but he still put a damper on dinner.”
I watched as Cillian crafted the perfect bite and popped it into his mouth. “What do you do, Cillian?”
He lifted his eyebrows in an amused question as he chewed.
“I mean, you look too old to be in college. I know Maddox is a professor.”
Cillian leaned back in his chair and took a sip of wine. “I own a club. And a few other businesses.”
My mind caught on the word club. That would be the perfect place to distribute drugs. Great, just great. I had found myself caught up in some cartel operation.
“What made you want to be a doctor?” he asked.
