ROGUE GAMES

DEAN

This is my worst nightmare come true.

“Calm down. It’s just until the Games are over. Maybe it won’t be that bad.” My beta Callum looks as unconvinced as I am but keeps his tone upbeat. I appreciate the effort but nothing is going to make this any better.

Arms folded across my chest, I glower at the wolves pouring across the bridge and into my territory. They saunter across the border we’ve kept closed for years, laughing and joking, curiosity shining in their eyes as they approach the tree line where I stand.

They’re almost as interested at getting a look at the land they’ve been forbidden from entering since my father took over as alpha thirty years ago, as they are in the upcoming contest. Every pack hates us, but given the chance to snoop around, they’ve turned up in force.

“I think you’re supposed to welcome them,” Callum prompts as the approaching wolf shifters stop in front of me, unsure whether I’m going to allow them to pass.

Only permitting this event to take place on my land under duress, I sigh, knowing there’s no way to stop this, no matter how much I want to. It’s too late. The biggest and strongest wolves from all over are arriving here over the coming days, eager for their shot at winning a pack of their own.

The Alpha Games. The first to be held in decades. The biggest ticket in town.

As I scan the expectant faces, waiting for some kind of motivational speech or warm greeting, I can’t wait for it to be over already.

“You’re in my house. My rules. If any of you piss me off, you’ll be going home before this even begins.”

The sea of frowns worsens my mood, and when I see Blake Steel standing at the rear of the crowd, shaking his head, I sigh, standing aside to let them walk by.

“Great job,” Callum mutters sarcastically with a shake of his head.

“Shut up. Just follow them and make sure they don’t go wandering around alone,” I snap. The only reason I’m being made host this thing is because no wolf has an advantage here, they’re all equally clueless about the terrain. And because Blake Steel wants to torture me.

Callum nods and strides away, doing a terrible job of hiding his amusement at my displeasure.

“Breathe Dean. You never know, you might enjoy yourself and have some fun.” Blake Steel smirks, knowing full well how much this is paining me.

Not fucking likely.
