“Go. We will meet you there,” Josh says.

We’ve been sitting in this fucking waiting room for two hours now. Jennifer has gotten a few updates so we know she’s alive. She stabilized as soon as they gave her blood, but they’re working on getting her stitched up.

Thank God, he didn’t hit anything major. He narrowly missed an artery though. We thought she would need surgery, but they just had to get the bleeding to stop so they could close her up. She has enough cuts, so I’m glad they avoided giving her any more scars.

“Kaia,” Jennifer says. “Stop pacing, sweetie. You’re going to wear a path in the tile.”

“I can’t help it. I’m sorry,” she says.

“I know you’re worried. They’re just working on getting her fixed up, okay? It’s a lot of stitches so the plastic surgeon asked that no one be there so he can concentrate.”

“Are you sure?” she asks.

“They would have called me. I promise,” she says.

“You okay?” Dax asks me.

“Hmm?” I say, lost in thought. “Oh. Uh… I don’t know.”

“What’s going on?” he asks.

“I just… The way she screamed… I don’t know if I’ll ever get that out of my mind,” I admit.

“Honestly? Probably not. That’s trauma though. Once you see her awake, you’ll feel a bit better. It won’t stop you from remembering though.”

“I just… I really thought she was dying. I didn’t want to believe it, even when you started CPR…”

“Yeah. I’m sorry I was short with you. I was just focused on her,” Dax says, rubbing his hands down his face.

“Aaron,” Jennifer says as a man comes in.

“Hey, guys,” he says as he sits with us.

“How is she?” David asks before looking at the rest of us. “This is Aaron Wells.”

“She’s good. She’s a tough little thing,” he says. “I used glue on the ones on her arms and legs, but the ones on her abdomen have a few with stitches.”

“Holy fuck. How many times did he cut her?” Kaia asks, wide-eyed.

“She has one on each arm, a few in her thighs, and five on her abdomen. The surgeon used dissolvable sutures and glue to close up where she was stabbed,” he says.

“How are the burns?” I ask.

“What?” Kaia asks. “What burns?”

“What caused them?” Aaron asks me.

“A stun gun,” I frown.

“That’s probably what led to her heart stopping. She was already in shock, so the bleeding added more stress to her body,” Dax says.

“I believe they gave her two units of blood when she got here,” Aaron says. “And the burns are okay. She has a few on her inner thigh that are pretty intense but they should heal alright. You’ll just have to keep an eye on them for infection.”

“Is she awake?” Kaia asks. “Can we see her?”

“I’m going to assume you’re the best friend?” he asks with a smile.
