“She’s dying,” I say. Maybe I’m in denial but there’s no way that she’s gonna die. She can’t. I’ve not gotten enough time with her. She hasn’t even been able to spend the holidays with her parents yet. Kaia is going to be devastated.

Her parents reappear with what looks to be a duffle bag. “She’s losing too much blood,” Dax tells them.

“How long has it been?” David asks as he puts a mask over her nose and mouth. When he squeezes the bag, it breathes for her.

“Less than a minute. She went unconscious a second before,” Dax says as Jennifer takes over. I look up to see my brothers at the door. They have a horrified look on their face.

“What the fuck happened?” Luca says.

“Enzo stabbed her,” Dax says when I can’t.

“Hands off,” Jennifer says as she places pads on her chest. “Matt. Hands off. I need to do this.”

Milo and Luca come over and pull me back some when they see I can’t take my hands off her. The second my hands are off of her a flood of tears takes over. My brothers hold me as I fall apart.

I can’t lose her. I wanted a life with her. I wanted to marry this woman. She deserves happiness, not to be taken out by someone who pretended to be her brother while he raped her.

“She’s back,” Jennifer says. “We need to take her ourselves. she’s not gonna make it if we wait on that ambulance.”

“I’ll drive her,” Dax says.

“We’ll ride with you,” Dad says before looking at my brothers. “She’s going to end up in surgery immediately. Bring Matt up but call Kaia first.”

“She can’t die,” I say.

“We’ve got her, Matt. I promise we will take good care of her,” Jennifer says as Dax scoops her up from the floor. I jump up and cup her face to gently kiss her forehead.

“Please don’t give up, tesoruccia,” I beg.

“We need to go, Matt,” Dax says. I kiss her again before stepping back and letting him take her away.

“Call Josh,” Luca tells me. “I’ll talk to Kaia.” I nod and pick my phone up from the floor.

“How is she?” he answers.

“It’s bad,” I say with a trembling voice.

“Oh no. What happened?” he asks. “Is an ambulance there yet?”

“Her heart stopped. Dax started CPR,” I say. “Uhm.. her parents got here and shocked her. They got her back but… they uh… they took her. They said she wouldn’t make it if we waited.”

“Fuck. Okay. She’ll be okay with them. Where are you?” he asks.

“At the house. Luca is calling Kaia before we go to the hospital,” I say.

“And Enzo?” he asks.

“Milo I think is staying to wait for the police,” I say.

“Okay. I am headed that way right now. Other officers should arrive before me so as soon as they get there he can leave. I’ll meet you at the hospital. Okay?”

“She can’t die,” I say, defeated.

“She’s a fighter. She’ll be okay,” he says confidently.

“Police are here,” Milo says.

“Kaia is meeting us there,” Luca says. “Come on.”
