“Check your blood sugar,” Kaia tells Aurora.
“Do you have diabetes?” Jennifer asks.
“No. No. I have hypoglycemia,” Aurora says. “I switched doctors and they are actually trying to figure out what it is since my old doctor never did anything besides tell me I was fat.”
“But it’s under control?” she asks.
“Uhhh…”
“When she eats regularly and isn’t stressed out,” Kaia says.
“So no,” Aurora laughs. “I’m trying to get better with eating. I have a bad habit of not eating when I get stressed out.”
“It’s genetic,” David says.
“Yeah. I have hypoglycemia,” Jennifer says. “It skipped the boys, but I suppose it didn’t skip you.”
For the remainder of lunch, Aurora talks to her family, and they get to know each other. Her family lives a pretty normal life. All things considered, they are nice, normal people. As time goes on Aurora relaxes more and can talk to Nick.
When we get back to the station, the detectives confirm that Jennifer and David are her biological parents. This is the first time that she allows them to come within arms reach of her and she hugs her parents. The detectives give us room and Aurora continues to talk to her family. Eventually, it gets late and everyone exchanges numbers.
“You’ll call us?” Jennifer asks Aurora.
“I will,” she smiles. “I’m sorry the first time we meet is… this.”
“We are just happy to have you back. I can’t count how many different ways I have dreamed of this day,” she says. Aurora doesn’t say anything, she just reaches out and hugs her Mom. Jennifer puts her arms around her as she fights back tears.
Seeing Aurora with her family makes me happy for her. She has lived a hard life, so it will be nice for her to have some normalcy for once. When we go to leave, and everyone is saying their goodbyes, she lets her brothers hug her. She is hesitant when they ask but when she says yes, it’s Nick who gets through to her first when he promises that he will never hurt her. Dax and Sterling make similar remarks when they hug her.
Chapter Nineteen
Aurora
We get back to Matt‘s house and conclude that Kaia and his brothers are safe to go home. I, on the other hand, do not want to go home. I don’t know how to express my desire to stay with him. That apartment is attached to so many negative memories of Enzo. It will never be the same there. I will never be able to sleep in my own bed without thinking of what he’s done to me there.
“Are you staying here?” Kaia asks me.
“I don’t know,” I say.
“Do you want to?” Matt asks.
“Yes,” I say quietly.
“Okay, well call me later. Okay?” Kaia asks.
“I will,” I say as she hugs me.
Everyone leaves and suddenly it’s just Matt and I. “Come here, tesoruccia,” he says as he sits on the couch. When I step closer, he pulls me into his lap to straddle him.
“What does that mean?” I ask.
“It means little treasure,” he says as he settles his hands on my thighs. “Where is your head?”
“You tell me,” I say as I push my hips against his. He makes a noise somewhere between a growl and a groan before pressing his thumbs into the bend of my hips. I gasp and drop my head to his chest.
“You enjoy teasing me, don’t you?” he asks.
“Yes,” I breathe.
