“Yes,” he says with a soft smile. “Jennifer and David Cooper are both doctors. She is fifty-seven and he is fifty-nine.”
“So that’s my last name?” I ask. “Cooper?”
“Pending the DNA test, yes.”
“But the blanket is the same,” Kaia says.
“Yes. Stranger things have happened, so I don’t like to confirm things until I can prove it with DNA… But I do think they are your biological family.”
“How did you come back with this so fast?” Matt asks.
“David and Jennifer have a meeting with the Captain every three months,” Celina says. “Captain Sneed was the responding detective when Jennifer called the police.”
“So they’ve been looking for her?” Kaia asks.
“Yes. For over twenty years,” Josh says.
“Where do they live?” I ask.
“Here in Chicago,” he says.
“Do I have any siblings?” I ask.
“You do. Jennifer and David have three sons. You would be the youngest of them,” Celina says. That’s not the answer I wanted. I know I shouldn’t judge them based on Enzo, but fear is the only thing that I feel when being told I have three older brothers.
“We will make sure they know that you’d like to meet them first,” Celina says, seeming to understand what I am feeling.
“I will warn you that they will show up with their parents. They have played a huge role in looking for you.”
“I don’t know what to say to that,” I admit. “I’ll meet them first and go from there.”
“Okay. I am going to go grab Captain Sneed and call them,” Josh says as he stands.
“Eat, please,” Matt says when he sees that I am shaky.
“Are you okay?” Celina asks.
“Yeah. I just have low blood sugar problems,” I say. I sit back and eat my bar while sipping on my juice. By the time the door opens again, I am done.
“Aurora, this is Captain James Sneed,” Josh says.
“It is so nice to meet you,” he says, shaking my hand, then the others. “Josh called Jennifer and David. They know very little about what’s going on because we wanted you to be here when It’s explained.”
“So Paul and Rita are going to jail?” Kaia asks.
“They’ll be brought in for questioning at first,” Sneed says.
“When will they be here?” I ask.
“They work at the hospital down the road, so they’ll be here in a moment. Their sons will be with them,” Josh says.
“Do they know they are meeting with me?” I ask.
“No,” Sneed says. “After all of these years looking for you, I don’t want them finding out over the phone.”
“What about Enzo?” I ask. “What is going to happen with him?”
“So, Enzo was a kid when you were taken, so he won’t be a part of this. We do have a warrant out for his arrest for first-degree rape though. Between Kaia’s statement, yours, and the report that the doctor at the hospital filed with us, we have enough to charge him.”
