“No,” she yells. “You absolutely do not let anyone fucking call them. Do you understand? No one besides me.”

“Okay. Okay. No parents. She has a brother, right? Anyone?”

“No. No one but me. I’m not kidding. If you call them and I don’t kill you, she will,” Kaia says.

“They’re here,” Milo says as paramedics get to us.

“Her blood sugar is 45,” I say to the woman. “Kaia, we will see you there. Okay?”

“Okay. Take care of her, please. I’m trusting you,” she says before ending the call.

I keep my hand on Aurora as the paramedics roll her to her side. They get out what looks like an injection, but they check her blood sugar again. “Yeah. 42,” the woman says to her partner.

“Fuck,” Maria says again. “That’s dropping fast.”

“She’ll be okay. We are going to give her a glucagon injection and get her to the hospital to be monitored,” the woman says as she sticks the needle into the muscle on her arm.

“Ready to move her?” the man asks.

“Yep. Let’s go,” she says. “Did she hit her head when she collapsed?”

“No. I caught her,” I say.

“You ride with her and we will meet you,” Luca says to me. I nod and they leave the restaurant.

“I’ll call you and tell you when she’s awake,” I tell Maria. “She’ll be okay.”

“Okay,” she says tearfully.

I walk out with Aurora and she gets loaded into the ambulance. The paramedic has me sit beside her, and she groans as she slowly opens her eyes.

“Well this is embarrassing,” she mumbles.

“At least it wasn’t wine,” I say and she smiles. Fuck, I love her smile. I take her hand into mine and gently squeeze it. She turns to look at me while the paramedic sets everything up to transport her.

“Maria panicked, didn’t she?” she asks weakly.

“Uh. Yeah,” I smile. “Kaia is meeting us at the hospital.”

“She’s going to kill me if my lack of glucose doesn’t,” she sighs.

“Best friend?” the paramedic asks.

“She’s basically my sister,” Aurora says.

“How low has your sugar been?” the paramedic asks her

“Would you believe me if I said I don’t know?” she asks.

“I’ve been doing this a while,” she smiles at her.

“It’s been below 70 all day,” she says.

“When did you eat last?”

Aurora glances at me before answering. “Yesterday morning.”

“You know if you have low blood sugar, you should be eating more than that,” the paramedic says.
