Once I have the order put in, I go to get the wine. “He has expensive taste,” Maria says.

“Apparently.”

“Want me to open it?” she asks.

“I’m okay,” I say.

“You’re shaky,” she says.

“It’s not bad. I’ll eat when I’m off the floor,” I lie. She sighs when I turn away from her and go back out to their table.

“How’s your shift been?” Luca asks.

“Boring,” I laugh and open the bottle of wine. “I think Maria is intentionally skipping me on the rotation.”

“Sounds like Maria,” Matt laughs. I pour their wine and Matt grabs my hand as I put the bottle in the ice. “You’re shaky again.”

“Good observation,” I say, but for whatever reason I don’t pull away.

“Maria says you have blood sugar issues?” he asks.

“Yeah,” I say, pulling away. “Hypoglycemia.”

“So your blood sugar is getting low?” Luca asks.

“That’s what hypoglycemia means. And before you act like Maria, I will eat when you guys leave.”

“Why not now?” Milo asks.

“Because I have a table full of needy men,” I say and they laugh. “I’m okay,” I say.

“Why do I feel like you are lying to me?” he asks, narrowing his eyes.

“Why do you care?” I ask bluntly.

“Last time I answered that question you looked scared,” he says softly.

“Yeah… I’m sorry about that,” I reply quietly.

“Don’t be. I’m a patient man,” he says.

“Why do I feel like you are lying to me?” I ask with a sweet smile.

“Touché,” he chuckles.

“I’m going to go piss off Maria and do some side work while your food comes up,” I say. “Let me know when you want more wine.”

“We can pour it. You’re okay,” he says.

“Scared I’ll touch you again?” I laugh.

“That’s a weird way to pronounce excited,” he smirks. I smile and shake my head at him.

“I’ll be back with your food,” I say before walking back to the kitchen. I’m feeling woozy so I go to my bag and check my blood sugar. As I’m waiting for the results to come up, Maria comes around the corner.

“You’re not okay, are you?” she asks.

“Just making sure,” I lie. The bell for the food comes up right as the meter reads “49”. I put the meter away and walk over to grab the food. “That was fast.”
