“Mmmm. I do like them feisty,” he says as he stands to try and block her.
“Kaia!” I yell at her when she snatches a steak knife off the table. Enzo instinctively takes a step back from her.
“If you ever touch her again, I will fucking gut you. DO you understand me, Enzo?”
Enzo doesn’t say anything, he just steps aside to let her pass. Kaia gets back to me and she pushes me back through the kitchen until we get to the front door. Once the door is open I take off running to get into her car. What a useless time for my body to finally do what I want it to. Kaia jumps into the driver’s seat and turns the engine over. She backs out in a hurry when she sees my family come out of the house, onto the porch.
“What do you want to do? Do you want to go to the hospital?”
“No. I just want to go home,” I say.
“I will only agree to keep quiet if you tell me everything and you promise to me that you are done with them,” she says.
“I promise. I’m done with them,” I say quietly. “I just wanted a family.”
“Rora, baby. I am your family. It’s you and me against the world. You don’t need them because you have me. Okay?”
“Okay,” I sniffle.
“Ride or die, bitch. You’re stuck with me,” she says as she takes my hand and squeezes.
“Thank you,” I say.
“Anything for you, babe,” she says with a smile.
Chapter Six
Mattia
I am sitting at my desk at home and I can’t stop thinking about Aurora and her family. Why would they cut her out? Part of me thinks that maybe she’s not as good of a person as I think, but something is nagging at me to figure it out. I should be working on quarterly numbers, but I text my brothers instead.
Me: You guys coming over soon?
Luca: Almost there. Why?
Me: I just need to bounce some thoughts off you guys.
Milo: Still thinking about Aurora?
Me: Yeah. It’s bugging me.
Milo: We just pulled in. Be there in a sec.
I stare at my computer until my brothers walk in. “Hey,” I say.
“What’s up?” Luca asks
“Something is off about her family,” I say.
“They’re Rich. Of course, something is off,” Milo says. “The life they portray is not the life they live. It never is.”
“What if it’s not her family that’s off?” I ask.
“Are you suggesting that she might be up to some shit?” Luca asks.
“Yeah. What if this sweet and innocent act is just that? An act,” I say. “What if I get attached to this girl and she royally fucks us?”
“I would advise you not to project that to her unless you know for sure,” Milo suggests. “Overreacting over a feeling would cost you not only any potential relationship, but you could hurt her.”
