Falling.

Sarah flailed as she tumbled, catching the fabric over the guy’s chest with her nails and the door handle with her other hand, but everything slipped out of her fingers as she fell on her patoot.

But the man lost his grip on her shoulder.

She rolled to the side, kicking at the guy and scrambling to her feet.

His thick arms swung at her as she ran. She dodged and tried to reach the back of the barn, where another door let a crack of early morning sunlight in.

He grabbed at her again.

She ducked under his grasping fist. “Get away from me!”

“I’m here to help—” he called after her as she ran.

Her arm and shoulder yanked backward.

He swung her in a circle.

Sarah stumbled, trying to stay on her feet. “You’re trying to take me hostage to threaten me again! Heck no!”

“I’m not here to threaten you. You’re in danger.”

“From you!”

He tugged at her arm like they were square-dancing and pulled her against his chest with her back to him, and he wrapped his burly arms all the way around her arms and body.

Trapped.

Sarah lifted her feet and pulled her knees to her chest, trying to be a dead weight and pull him off-balance like all the self-defense classes taught.

The guy held her curled body, not even stumbling.

She jerked herself around in his hold. “You can’t kill me,” she cried out, desperation grating in her throat as she screamed. “You can’t! Please don’t! I’m responsible for all of it, and there’s no one else who will do it if I die!”

“Listen to me.”

“No! You’re a criminal, and you threatened me and Aunt Mary! You’re here to kill me this time, and I can’t die right now!”

“Your brother sent me,” he said, his voice lower and near her ear.

Sarah strained and flopped in his arms, trying to head-butt him in his face with the back of her skull. “I don’t have a brother!”

“Your brother, Logan Bell. He said you’re his sister.”

“He’s not my brother!” she yelled as she writhed, trying to escape.

“Logan told me he was your brother.” His voice was strained like he was having trouble holding onto her.

Sarah kicked out and backward, trying to nail him in the legs with her boot heels. “Logan left us when I was a little kid. I haven’t seen him since I was seven. Dad said he was gone and I don’t have a brother anymore.”

“Logan sent me to save you.”

“Logan left us. He’s gone! That’s why I inherited the farm, and now it’s all mine and I’m responsible for all of it!”

The weight of the entire farm and being kidnapped smothered her. She flipped herself around like a fish jumping around the bottom of a boat, but the man’s arms wrapped her arms against her sides like steel cables.

The man said, “Logan told me you were in danger. He sent me to keep you safe.”
