“I doubt it made a blip.”

“Oh, okay.”

“Because my heart is always racing around you,” he said.

She leaned back to stare at him. “Nuh-uh.”

Blaze paused and stared straight ahead. “The health app on my watch asked if I felt okay this morning.”

“No!”

He looked down at her, his expression as blank as always. “Absolutely. You’re going to give me a heart attack.”

“Was that another joke?”

He shrugged and loosened his arms. “Probably. Romain is going to pound on the garage door any second, though, demanding we get on the road.” He checked his phone. “No, he texted his demands. We need to go.”

“He texted?”

He dropped his arms completely and stepped back. “Affirmative. I am no longer joking.”

“Yeah, we should—”

Blaze reached past her to open the passenger-side door she’d been leaning on and stood beside it, waiting.

Sarah stepped in and settled herself.

He gently closed her door and walked around the car’s black-enameled hood to the driver’s side.

As he walked, his eyes were up, scanning, even though they were in the closed, locked garage.

His gaze wasn’t wary like he expected or feared an attack.

No, he was a predator, looking for something to kill, waiting for prey to enter his territory so he could devour them.

Well, he’d certainly devoured—

Oh, no-no-no. Sarah would not become boy-crazy and start thinking about S-E-X all the time. Beyond any concept of sin, she wasn’t that type of woman. She was hardworking and owned her own farm. Farm work didn’t leave a lot of time for sleeping around.

This interlude would end somehow, and then she would return to her farm to settle Charlie and HowNow back into their daily routine.

She didn’t want to think about how this was going to end.

Blaze stepped into the car and pressed a button near the rearview mirror.

The garage door retracted behind them, revealing a caravan of black SUVs waiting on the driveway.

Blaze said, his face as solemn as ever, “Time to go.”

Paranoia

Blaze

During the drive out of Chicago, the Rogue Security SUVs escorted Blaze and Sarah on the freeway, their tight formation sealing Blaze’s Aston Martin off from the rest of the traffic.

Blaze sped in the fast lane with one Rogue Sec SUV ahead, one behind, and two flanking them in the center lane.
