A quick glance assured him the poor little thing was free and trembling as it stood on knobbly, wobbly legs in the grass, his mother-mare nuzzling his head and shoulders as she encouraged him to nurse. Something like a prayer escaped Blaze’s heart that it was all right.
But Sarah was still off-balance, teetering on the hillside.
As Blaze reached out to steady her with his mud-soaked hand, she pinwheeled and tumbled on top of him, smearing his muddiness all over her legs and chest.
Her softness against him was all the reward he needed for freeing that stupid baby horse from the ground because its mommy was upset.
Above him, Sarah’s cheeks flushed pink.
His hands circled her waist. He’d had every intention of setting her aside and then helping her to her feet, but Sarah leaned down and kissed him, the plushness of her lips brushing and then sucking his.
The world and all its troubles faded away as her soft weight pressed him against the earth under his back.
His arms were around her, crushing her against himself and trying to feel every inch of her body through that ridiculous knit sweatsuit he’d found in his guest bedroom for her to wear.
His palm rubbed over her back and spine, the mud mostly wiped off on the grass, and he gave himself over to the kiss, every succulent inch of her squirming on top of him. Blood rushed in his body, filling his skin and his dick, floating his head as she moved on top of him. God, he could stay like this forever, or if she kept it up, he could roll her over, gather her underneath him, and scare the horses.
Sarah’s kisses grew lighter, and then she stared down at him with glazed eyes and a smile. “Thanks for rescuing that stupid horse with me.”
Blaze laughed at her. “Natural selection didn’t get him this time.”
The seriousness in her expression warmed him. “I still appreciate it.”
Long grass waved around them, and the sun fell in the sky. “Anytime.”
“That’s not what I mean. It was a big favor, to drop everything and chase a horse because I said her foal was in trouble.”
“You were right, though.”
“But it was a whim. It was irresponsible of me.”
“No, it wasn’t a whim. Helping someone in trouble, even if they’re a horse, is right on point for you. This is the real you, Sarah.”
A frown creased her eyebrows. “Huh?”
Blaze settled his hands more firmly on her back. “You said you didn’t know who ‘the real you’ was this morning. This is you. When you’re not pouring eighty percent of your energy into trying to live up to what your parents decreed for you, you’re the one who instinctively runs to help the horse in need. Or the kid. Or the person, I’d wager. You’re a good person, Sarah, even if you want to get into trouble sometimes.”
Sarah tilted her head and searched his eyes like she might find gold in there. “You do like me.”
Blaze rested his hands on the small of her back and wove his fingers together, holding her. “Yeah, I like you.”
Her eyes dipped, and she turned her gaze to the hills around them. “What I mean is, where is this going?”
This meant too much to her to play around. “It will go wherever we want it to, kitten. Our first stop is New York and your brother, and don’t say he betrayed the family.”
She nodded. “I need to hear his side of the story because I think my parents were wrong about a lot of things.”
Oh, his little sweet pea of a human.
Long strands of hair had escaped her braid and fluttered like dark ribbons in the country breeze.
Blaze smoothed his hands over her head, capturing them, and he repressed the urge to gather her hair in his hands and use it to turn her head so he could taste her throat. “You’re amazing.”
“But after we go to New York and see Logan,” she said, her voice hoarse, “after New York, where is this going?”
He stroked his thumb over her cheekbone, not leaving a mud smear. “My fiendish plan is to convince Logan you’d be best off locked in a New Hampshire cabin with me for a year while I plunder your body and make you fall for me, but if that doesn’t pan out, I suppose I’ll have to follow you wherever you go to make sure you’re safe, jumping on you when there’s gunfire and rescuing horses with you.”
Because what the hell, Blaze had been at loose ends since he’d resigned his naval commission. Being Sarah’s knight errant seemed like as good a way as any to pass the time.
