Chapter 28
-Alison-
Jared was not wrong. I couldn’t stay in the water forever. I wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but he eventually settled into a lounge chair, his arms resting on his knees, watching me. It was evident that he had plenty of time, and the longer I remained immersed in the water, struggling to keep afloat, the more exhausted I became. Hours must have gone by, and my bladder was uncomfortably full, while the gnawing hunger in my stomach grew stronger. The sun slowly descended, and my body began to shiver.
“Get out of the water, Alison,” Jared said, his voice calm, though I knew that once I complied, I would face his wrath.
“N-No,” I replied, my teeth chattering.
“Alison, you can’t stay in the water forever.”
“I-I will stay.”
“Just get out of the water!”
“No.”
“You will drown!”
“Okay.”
“Don’t say that,” he snarled, standing up and beginning to pace again. “You’re not playing by the rules.”
“Y-Your r-rules never said I-I couldn’t go for a s-swim,” I taunted, feeling the ache in my arms, and I had begun to shiver.
“Oh, shall I remember to make that clear next time?” he retorted. I smiled back, nodding a little, but my eyes closed, and I dipped beneath the water.
I accidentally inhaled some water and came up coughing and sputtering.
“Alison!” Jared yelled, and I could almost hear the panic in his voice. Of course, he couldn’t allow me to die. Returning a corpse to its former life was a complicated affair. “Alison, just get out of the water.”
“N-No.”
“This isn’t a game anymore. Get out!” he yelled.
I shook my head, my wet hair and face sending droplets of water around.
“Alison!”
“Y-You have to g-get in.”
“I’m not getting in!”
“Because y-you can’t,” I mocked, before dipping beneath the water again, only to come right back up, coughing some more.
“Fuck! Alison, seriously!” he shouted. “Get. Out.”
“Get. In!” I mimicked.
“You’re putting your own life at risk.”
“W-We are gambling. Remember?”
“This is not gambling anymore. You’re being plain stupid!” he retorted.
I smiled up at him, aware that I was growing too weary to remain much longer. However, I couldn't afford to leave either. Who knew why he insisted on those extra 24 hours? Perhaps hehad something horrific in mind. Therefore, I was prepared to take my chances with the water.
“Alison!” he scolded.
