“So how will you tame her, Master?” I asked, the attitude evident in my voice.

“That’s not really any of your concern. It’s not like you like her.”

“Of course I don’t! She made you...” I trailed off, not sure if arguing about this would change anything. Besides, I didn’t want to relive that moment when Astrid made him pleasure her.

“I have been through worse,” he said.

“I know. I don’t feel bad for you either. Why would I? It’s not me who is still going to marry her!” I retorted.

"No, you're just returning to a man who gets other women pregnant because you can't!" Jared's words struck me like a sucker punch to the gut. My blood quickened as he exploited that one vulnerability that I had disclosed to him. I despised myself for admitting it, and he knew exactly how to twist the knife deep into an already gaping wound, inflicting maximum pain. Though I understood he had every right to hurt me after everything that had transpired, it didn't diminish my resentment toward him for using that information against me.

With determination, I marched up to him, glaring up at Jared as I halted before him. A torrent of words and insults filled my mind, ready to burst forth to label him a heartless jerk and tell him to enjoy his wretched life with his dreadful wife. After all, his marriage was unlikely to be much better than mine. But instead of unleashing my rage, I slipped past him and stormed out.

I could hear his footsteps trailing behind me as I quickened my pace, stomping away in anger like a child denied her wishes. I wouldn't have been surprised if he intended to punish me once we returned to the bedroom. However, before I could even reach the hallway leading to the staircases, he seized the strap of my bag, forcibly pulling me back to him.

“Hey!” I complained as the pull had been rough, digging the strap into my shoulder.

“You don’t just take off like that, slave.”

“Why not? Have I not earned a whipping and a rough fucking for my attitude?”

“You certainly have, but that doesn’t mean you get to storm off.”

“Let’s just get it over with?” I challenged.

Jared reached out, grabbing my jaw and making me focus on him. “Have I said something that was untrue?” he snarled.

“No.”

“Then don’t act like a fucking child who doesn’t like it when they don’t get their way. You married him, Alison. You vowed to be his wife, and then you stayed with him, even though he screwed up in so many ways. You did this to yourself!” he reminded me.

“I know! I know what I trapped myself in. Trust me! But that doesn’t mean I want to have that woman’s affair baby shoved in my face. I know you like using my past against me, and if it was because you made me watch a video of them fucking, I wouldn’t care as much, but you know what I have done to get pregnant. You know the thousands of dollars I have spent on it, and the numerous procedures I have gone through in order to get pregnant. You know it has picked at my soul every time I failed. That’s why I somehow preferred that you thought he was a rapist, because then at least you couldn’t taunt me with the fact I’m a fucking defect!”

“What?” he whispered.

“Come on! It’s what everyone thinks, or would think if they knew the truth. ‘She isn’t so perfect after all.’ ‘She isn’t the great wife she should be, because she fucking can’t get pregnant’!” I shouted, feeling my heart break all over again. “I’m defective.”

He sighed, allowing his hand to fall and releasing the strap of his bag. To my surprise, he didn't immediately agree with me. Instead, he shook his head with a disappointed expression.

"You're the only one who thinks that," he informed me.

"If everyone else knew—"

"But it's not everyone who knows. I know!" he interjected.

My mouth hung open, stuck in the midst of a sentence I never got to finish, as his words slowly sank in. Gradually, I closed it, uncertain of what to say, as the realization of his statement dawned on me. The silence stretched on, yet it didn't feel awkward. We both simply struggled to find the right words. Inmy uncertainty, I redirected the conversation back to him and his future wife.

“Well, let’s just hope your future wife doesn’t have an icy womb like me, right?” I whispered before I turned and began walking.

“You think I want children with her?” he called after me.

I slowly turned to him, shrugging. “I don’t know. Do you?”

He appeared to tense slightly as he contemplated my question. I had no idea whether Jared had any desire to become a parent. Given the life he had lived and the challenging childhood he had endured, it was entirely possible that he had no interest in having children. Nonetheless, he deliberated over my question for quite some time.

“Do you want children?” I inquired, growing more intrigued as I took a step forward.

“I’m going to have them.”
