“Please, I don’t want your money,” she replied, her voice barely audible.
“No, I know what you want, but you’re not going to get it,” I asserted firmly. “I don’t want this to come to light, and I don’t want Warren to know it’s his child. Does he even know you’re pregnant?”
She seemed poised to answer, but I raised my hand to silence her. “No, I don’t want to know because it won’t matter. You’regoing to leave, and you can never return. Do you understand? You have a child to care for now, but rest assured that if you ever attempt to pin this child on Warren, I will destroy you, and Warren won’t be there to rescue you or your child.”
Tears continued to stream down her face as her lower lip quivered, but she nodded, her gaze dropping to the floor in shame. I tore the blood test to shreds, rendering it meaningless.
“Give me your phone. You’ll text me the amount you need, and I’ll transfer it,” I instructed. She handed me her phone, and I input my number before returning it to her. “Once I send it, you’ll delete my number, but I’ll keep yours. If you even contemplate returning, you know what will happen.”
She remained silent, crying silently, and the more she wept, the more my heart ached. I couldn’t believe the situation I found myself in, but I refused to let her see me break. I walked back inside, slamming the door shut, and that’s when my legs finally gave way. I collapsed to the floor, tears flowing uncontrollably. The pain inside me needed an outlet, and I couldn’t suppress it any longer. I had been taught that such behavior was unacceptable, but this time, I couldn’t contain it.
After crying for an undetermined amount of time, I mustered the strength to stand. I changed my clothes and reapplied my makeup, but I felt utterly numb inside. As I descended to the kitchen to pour myself some wine, I stood by the kitchen island, waiting for Warren to appear. He did so shortly after, his initial smile fading as he observed the expression on my face.
“Alison, is something wrong?” he cautiously inquired, setting down his briefcase and drawing nearer.
“This is the last time,” I warned.
“What?”
“I said this is the last time one of your whores appears at this house. Do you hear me?” I yelled.
He sighed, leaning on the kitchen island and focusing on me with eyes that no longer held any love or affection. It had gradually disappeared over time, but I still clung to the hope that we could salvage our relationship. I had been raised to believe that failure wasn’t an option.
“I’ll take care of it,” he replied.
“No, I’ve already taken care of it. Don’t bother. Just promise me that this is the last one,” I demanded.
He nodded, but I no longer trusted him. I had stopped trusting him long ago.
“Last one,” he reassured me.
I put on my practiced mask. It was the only source of strength I had left. I couldn’t allow myself to crumble again. I refused to.
“Good. Then we won’t speak of this anymore.”
I finished my wine and placed the glass away, heading upstairs.
“You’ll be sleeping in the guestroom,” I informed him as I walked past him, but just as I was about to leave the kitchen, he called out to me.
“Who was it? Did you get her name?”
My entire body shook with anger. The swirling emotion seemed to constrict my chest, and in those few words, he shattered my soul.
“No, I didn’t ask,” I replied calmly before making my way upstairs.
Chapter 14
-Jared-
My mind swirled with a torrent of thoughts as I contemplated why Alison couldn’t answer my question. She quivered before me, resembling a beaten dog, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Strangely, the tears didn’t bring me the satisfaction I had anticipated. Nevertheless, I was determined to extract the answer I sought. I had triumphed in our game, and she was now obligated to reveal the truth.
I seized her by the throat, pressing her harder against the wall as I tightened my grip.
“Tell me. I’m ordering you,” I growled into her face, and her cries intensified as she shook her head.
“Please. Ask me anything else,” she pleaded desperately.
“No, I’m asking you this question. What did he do to that woman?”
