I wasn’t sure how much Alison knew about her father, but I doubted she truly understood the man. She had acted so shocked when she was exposed to my world. I believed her father had sheltered her from the truth, a smart move on his part. But how much did her mother know? Was she complicit in the whole ordeal? Was this how she supported her drinkinghabits? There was still much to learn, and that’s why I decided to play a game with Alison today. She believed I had given her an advantage, but she didn’t know this place as I did, nor did she have access to the tools at my disposal.

I would let her run around until there was little time left, then I would come for her, and she would be compelled to answer any questions I posed. I couldn’t say I believed she would be entirely honest, but at the very least, this diversion would keep her occupied while I worked.

“Jared?” Vince entered the room, holding a cup of coffee, but it seemed the contents had spilled over the sides, and his hand was still trembling.

“You know you could have ordered someone to fetch that for you, right?” I pointed out as he settled into a chair behind the desk, more coffee spilling as he placed the cup down.

“You also know I can manage it myself, right?” he retorted.

“Yes, and you’ve only got a quarter of that coffee left.”

He sighed and attempted to unbutton his shirt, but even that seemed to be a struggle. Eventually, he gave up, having only loosened one button. He reclined in his chair, letting out a groan.

“You know it gets worse when you’re tired. Why aren’t you sleeping?” I asked.

“I’m... thinking.”

“When don’t you think?” I teased, earning a faint smile from him before he shifted the conversation away from himself.

“What is the pet up to?”

“She’s running around playing hide and seek.”

“Is that a code word?” he inquired, making me smile this time.

“No, we’re actually playing hide and seek.”

“Do you even know how that game works?” he taunted, well aware that I’d never had any friends to play such games with.

“I understand the rules.”

“And yet, you’re here.”

“I’m here, working as I should be.”

Vince chuckled softly, comprehending my intentions.

“She does realize this place is under constant surveillance, right?” he asked.

“I think the promise of freedom if she manages to win has made her forget,” I laughed.

“I taught you well.”

I nodded before focusing on the screen in front of me, attempting to unearth any dirt on these individuals. However, it was evident that they had expertly concealed their skeletons.

“Do you have any information on Alison’s father and the others?” I inquired.

“I’ve located one of their apartments. You should go there with Finn.”

“Not with Finn.”

“Why not?”

“He’s an arrogant prick,” I replied.

“Okay, take Noah.”

“Not Noah.”
