He looked up at me, fear in his eyes, but I snapped my fingers, urging him to move faster. He slowly pushed himself off the ground, looking like he was in a lot of pain. If none of the guys behind him had assaulted him, then who had? I didn’t press for an answer. Instead, I turned my attention to the other players.
“I’ve already given the others a dressing-down of a lifetime. Talk to them why you’re all in deep trouble. If any of you try something like this again, I’ll personally ensure you’re beneath even doggy here. I’ll turn your lives into personal hells, and I’ll relish every damn second of it. Do you HEAR me?” I shouted, causing the guys to take another step back in response to my anger. They nodded like obedient boys, and then I grabbed Jared’s arm, pulling him with me.
He didn’t resist. He simply followed me to my car, and I opened the door, instructing him to get in. He turned to me, confusion in his eyes, but I had no patience to waste.
“Get in the fucking car, doggy!” I yelled, but there was no look of gratitude on his face. He trembled even more than when he was with the other players, and I knew he thought I was going to take him somewhere private to continue the torture.
As he got into the car and I closed the door, a nagging thought crept into my mind, suggesting that perhaps that was exactly what I should do. I could play my private game with him, without the need for an audience. I could...No, I admonished myself, shaking my head and recalling my mother’s words. Jared was beneath me, and I couldn’t bring him back to my house. If my mother ever saw him there, I’d be kneeling on rice all night.
I took my place in the driver’s seat, fastening my seatbelt, and noticed that Jared hadn’t done the same.
“Do you want to die, doggy?” I asked, irritation lacing my voice.
“What?” he mumbled in confusion.
“Put on your damn seatbelt,” I ordered.
He fumbled with the seatbelt, his hands trembling so badly that it took him a couple of tries to secure it in place. I started the car and drove away from the scene. Normally, I considered myself a good driver, but tonight, I was fueled by anger, causing me to spin the wheels as I sped down the road.
We drove in silence. What was there to say? I was rectifying a major mistake made by my so-called friends tonight. How could they be so stupid? I needed to remind them that no one was untouchable except for me, and I certainly wasn’t going to let them drag me down with their reckless behavior.
“Where are you taking me?” Jared whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the engine.I stole a glance athim, observing his painted nails and the way his trembling fingers gripped his other hand.
“Home,” I replied, my tone clipped.
“H-Home?” he stammered, disbelief evident in his voice.
“Of course. You weren’t even supposed to be there tonight,” I explained.
Jared fell silent, gazing out the car window. He probably didn’t believe that I was actually taking him home, but as we pulled up to his house and I parked the car, I had proven that I kept my word.
“Here we are,” I said, but Jared didn’t move. He simply stared at the dark, dilapidated house. “Hello?”
Jared slowly turned to me, but his eyes were hidden in the shadows, making it impossible for me to read his expression.
“Get out, doggy. You’re making the car smell like shit,” I taunted. Jared hesitated for a moment before reaching for the seatbelt and unfastening it. His movements were agonizingly slow, as if he would rather stay in the car with me than go inside his house. It was an absurd thought. I made his life a living hell. I tormented him. Yet, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Jared seemed to move at a snail’s pace.
“God!” I exclaimed in frustration. Leaning over him, I shoved the car door open. “Get out!”
For some inexplicable reason, I didn’t take pleasure in making him leave. It felt like I was letting an opportunity slip through my fingers. That nagging voice resurfaced, tempting me with dark possibilities. No one would know. I could tell him to stay, to close the door, to turn off the car, plunging us into darkness. The others claimed his father was passed out drunk. No one would come looking.
Do it, the voice urged, but I clenched the steering wheel tighter, berating myself for entertaining such absurd thoughts. Jared stepped out of the car, standing outside.
“Doggy,” I called, and he lowered himself to peer into the car. “You tell no one about this. You were home the entire time. No one came to get you, and you were never taken to a party in the woods. Am I clear?”
Jared nodded, then closed the door. I gripped the gear lever, ready to drive away, but instead of pressing the accelerator, I turned to watch Jared’s retreating figure. Once more, he moved painfully slowly toward his house, not even bothering to take out any keys, suggesting that the house was unlocked. I observed him as he halted in front of the front door but didn’t enter.
“What are you doing?” I whispered. “Go inside.”
Jared remained outside the front door for what felt like an eternity before he finally grasped the handle and entered. I turned my attention back to the road ahead, but there was an unsettling feeling in the back of my mind, like a faint bell ringing. I couldn’t quite pinpoint why it was ringing now. Normally, it alerted me when I heard my mother approaching. So what had triggered it this time? I stole one last look at the house before driving away.
Chapter 11
-Alison-
I placed the food in front of Jared as he sat in the dining room. He had instructed the workers to take the afternoon off, so I could serve him. As I set the dishes down on the table and prepared to return to the kitchen, he unexpectedly reached out and grabbed my arm, causing me to emit a surprised squeal as he pulled me onto his lap.
“W-What are you doing? Am I not a maid today?” I inquired, wrapping an arm around his neck for support. He responded with a playful, dark smile.
