Chapter 1
-Jared-
The world around me had descended into darkness. There was no more pain, just an eerie silence that left me disoriented. Strange images flitted through my mind, and faint voices echoed, elusive and indistinct.
“If you walk out that door, you will never see him again, I guarantee it!”
“You can’t keep him from me! He is mine!”
“That’s where you’re wrong. You will never see him again. It’s either both of us or none of us,” a dark voice bellowed, a voice that never failed to send shivers down my spine.
“He is my son!”
“And you’re my wife. Choose!”
The slamming of a door made my entire body jolt. A dark shadow turned toward me, its eyes completely white, yet the cruel intent in them promised nothing but agony. What was happening? Why was it approaching me?
I longed to scream, but I couldn’t. Water had filled my mouth and lungs, while a tranquility settled over me. What were these images? Why couldn’t I make sense of them? Suddenly, I felt an odd tug, a coldness spreading through my body, and then something hard beneath me. Pressure on my chest followed, and my body convulsed, expelling salty water that tore through my throat. I coughed, rolling to my side, desperate to rid myself of the water. It seemed unending, causing me to tremble, with tears held captive in the corners of my eyes. The pain pierced through me, but at last, it came to an end.
“Did you never learn to swim?” a voice with a slight accent inquired.
All I wanted was to tell Finn to shut up, but I lacked the strength. I turned my head to find him hovering over me, an almost disappointed look on his face. The chaos had subsided, and he appeared perfectly unscathed, intensifying my desire to strike his face, if only to release my pent-up frustration and fear. I had come perilously close to death tonight, and the sensation lingered. Something had gone terribly wrong with our delivery. Instead of our expected cargo, women had arrived. I needed answers.
“Call...”
“What?” Finn asked, struggling to hear my words.
I coughed again, attempting to clear my lungs as best I could. Then, I reached for Finn, gripping his arm as I used it for support to rise to my knees.
“Call... Vince!” I growled.
“How do I know you didn’t betray us tonight?” he questioned, his suspicion evident.
“I... almost died,” I croaked out before using him again to pull myself to my feet, groaning with each movement.
“Are you shot?” he inquired, scanning my body.
I did feel a sharp pain in my leg, and when I looked down, I noticed blood seeping down my pant leg. I shook my head. There was no time to address it now or even contemplate it. I needed to unravel the events of tonight and determine what had gone awry.
“Call Vince,” I urged.
“You could have betrayed us,” Finn countered.
“Do you honestly believe I’d jump from the fucking boat, risking my life if that was our cargo?” I snapped.
He crossed his arms, his stubbornness evident. In a swift move, I grabbed his collar and pulled him closer.
“Either you call Vince, or I’ll knock you unconscious and take your phone,” I threatened.
“Why don’t you give it a try, little slave boy?” he taunted.
“You savages,” I muttered, then reached for my knife and pressed it against his throat. To my surprise, he smiled.
“Is that all?” he asked.
“I can make it very slow,” I warned.
“Girls, kiss and make up, and then let’s get out of here,” Noah chimed in, having casually lit a cigarette as though this were just another ordinary night.
