“I’ll see you later, my little slut,” he chuckled before running his hand down my hair as if he were petting me.
“Fucker,” I mumbled as he closed the door behind him.
Chapter 9
-Jared-
I left Alison in my room, feeling significantly better today compared to last night. The morning had begun on a positive note, but uncertainty hung in the air regarding the remainder of the day. Lately, whenever Vince summoned me to his office, it typically involved matters I found displeasing—a secret marriage, an unwelcome dinner, or unwanted advice. While I comprehended his concern for me and could see things from his perspective, he couldn't fully grasp the complexities of the relationship between Alison and me. Our mutual disdain was unshakable, and it would never change into anything else.
Therefore, I believed his concern should be alleviated by now. I had things under control and was committed to the plan. Letting him down was the last thing I desired after everything he had done for me. He could always rely on me.
I knocked on the door, and he permitted me to enter. Stepping inside, I found him standing by the window, his gaze fixed onthe tranquil world outside. I closed the door and approached, maintaining a bit of distance between us.
“The car is back,” he remarked.
“Yes, she returned on her own,” I informed him.
“I assume you’re keeping her for the remaining two weeks.”
I nodded, crossing my arms. He turned to me, studying my response.
“I was considering going back to my house with her now that everything is settled,” I said.
Vince shook his head and then walked over to his chair. I noticed he was still wearing the same clothes as last night, and it was evident he hadn’t slept at all. His desk was in disarray as well, which was unusual since he always kept things clean and neat.
“I’m not sure it’s wise for you to return,” he explained.
“Vince, I purchased that house and redesigned it to be her personal nightmare. I barely had the chance to use it before we had to come here. I’m already engaged to Astrid, and I plan to marry her after having my way with Alison. Why can’t we return?”
“Because I’ve been looking into who might have caused that little disruption last night,” he informed me.
“That was quick,” I commented.
“Yes, because I’ve been monitoring them for a while, but I didn’t think they were worth provoking until we were in a stronger position.”
“What exactly are you talking about?”
“I haven’t received confirmation yet. I’m still trying to determine if any surveillance footage might have yielded clues about the other men present last night. But I have a theory.”
“Okay,” I replied, moving closer as Vince handed me a folder.
“This is going to be your next target,” he told me.
I took the folder and opened it, realizing it wasn’t just one man who was my target. It was a whole list—an obvious organization working together. As I scanned the names, my heart suddenly froze in my chest. I turned to Vince, and he met my eyes coldly.
“No,” I responded, and I had never told him no in my life. I tossed the folder onto his desk before pacing.
Vince didn’t protest or say a word. He simply waited for me to process what I had read. We both knew that I would ultimately accept his demand. I continued to pace, running my hand through my hair, creating a disheveled mess.
“It can’t be true,” I whispered, coming to a halt and staring at the floor, my hands on my hips.
“They always hide in plain sight,” Vince reminded me.
I turned to him, observing his composed demeanor as he sat back in his chair, hands folded. His good eye conveyed no emotion, signaling that any defiance on my part would yield consequences, yet it wouldn’t change the ultimate outcome.
“No, it just...” I began, realizing that no matter what I said, it wouldn’t alter the situation. I walked over to his desk, placed my hands on it, and leaned forward. “Are you sure?”
“I’m uncertain if he was present last night or if the cargo was his, but I am certain that he is a problem that needs to be addressed,” Vince explained. “This city must remain under our control, son. We are now part of the wolves, and you need to ensure the security of your territory.”
